Exclamation What is it like to live with sclerosis of the liver?

Quote:
The liver cells do over 500 plus functions to
keep the body healthy. When they start to die off
and scar tissue develops in the liver, this scar
tissue blocks the flow of blood through the liver
and also to any liver cells left...these cells will
die, also. It is a progressive disease.

This disease becomes like a nightmare.
The skins and white of the eyes turn yellow.
The urine will become darker in color from
a yellow to a dark brown. The stools may
become very light in color and float on top
of the water. The patient will feel extremely
tired. They may have flu like symptoms,
depending on what caused the cells to die.
Their sleep pattern may change.
They may develop large amount of fluid
in their legs, ankles, and other extremities and
fluid build up in the abdomen (to the point that
they look like they are pregnant carrying
twins). As the toxins are not now taken care
of by the liver...they can go into the brain and
cause confusion and disorientation.
If the patient starts to show blood in the rectal
area, belly button area, or esophagal throw
up...it is an emergency...they could be bleeding
internally and this has to be stopped by
the doctors. Their muscles start to waste
away. They end up looking like a skeleton with
huge bellies. They may have pain, as the
liver enlarges in size and so does the spleen.
The liver will shrink in size as the cells
continue to die off...the liver will keep dying
inside of them. There is much more than
anyone could possibly write here.

This is just a taste of what Cirrhosis patients
go through. That doesn't include the
emotional aspect of it all. It is a horrible
disease of which there is no cure, except
for a liver transplant. That cost is in the
range of $300,000 and up.

I don't think Jeff started this thread as another Romper Room.

Yes. Sorry. I know this is serious. My grandmother had to have surgery because of smoking. She almost died. She's very lucky and I'm glad she is still here. Sorry for coming in like that.
