Re: Les Paul RIP
I've never become so attatched to a material thing in any way like i have done with my Les Paul. And for this i also must thank you, Lester. You've been a true inspiration to us all, and brought so much to the world, in both you're inventions, and your music.
Thank You.

Re: Les Paul RIP
Well, last night I played a show. Said a few words about the man. I still don't think any of us would be here, and I don't think rock and roll would be the same without Les Paul.
For all the kind words, I have to admit something...I have a slight burr under my saddle as far as how the media has treated his passing. In a lot of major publications and websites...there was no mention of it at all. Some tribute op-eds started showing up today, and he's still the most searched name on Google. Hey, you know something? He was a good guy. He wasn't an accused child molestor, a drug addict, a pornographer...he was just a dude who played guitar. And he did well. Sad thing....the media would rather shove stories down our collective throats over other celebs like Michael Jackson or Britney Spears or OJ Simpson vs. someone who did more good things vs. waste our collective time. Normally, when celebs die, I just shrug my shoulders. What do I care? This was a bit different though..... |

And I haven't heard one media story that even mentions his contributions to multitrack recording - which to me far outweighs the guitar. Les and Mary in the Studio:

Bing Crosby was very instrumental in helping Paul with that (funding...) But you're right...there isn't much mention of that either. Maybe the media would have paid more attention if Les Paul was some sort of deviant or something.

Re: Les Paul RIP
Rest in peace Les...
He was passionate about his art with a long and fruitful career. I just wish I'll be able to say the same thing about my life when my time comes.

Re: Les Paul RIP
In many countries in europe he wasn't even mentioned. I read about his death via a text message from a friend (I was in Sweden).
A loss of a legend. So silently. rip

Re: Les Paul RIP
Hey.
My local paper was kind enough to print a tribute I wrote regarding Les. I thought you might like to read it.

Re: Les Paul RIP
Very cool you know the man! Nice article!
It's hard to talk about Les and actually cover everything he did for all of us, the inventions, the style, the music... everything, just too much...

Re: Les Paul RIP
Having just joined MLP and now stumbling over this thread (Great website BTW), I wonder...how many here ever got to see Lester perform? I saw him in mid '89 at the 'Fat Tuesday' club on 17th St in Manhattan. What a great night that was!! Got him to sign a 78 Decca record for me - "It's Been a Long, Long Time" with Bing Crosby. Also, there was this 12 yr old kid in the audience that raised his hand to speak during Les's set. Said how much he admired him, going so far as to find his records & practice his various licks almost daily. With that, Les calls him up on stage to jam with him!! Les hands him HIS personal axe & asks "Whaddya wanna play?" They decide on "Sweet Georgia Brown". So Les takes over the rythm player's axe and the two of them go at it for about 4 minuets. Great entertainment for us in the crowd, and I'll bet that to this day that 12 year old kid hasn't lived a better moment in his life and perhaps never will. Les was a super 'genuine' human being & I feel honored to have met him up close & personal. We'll all miss you tremendously ya crusty ol buzzard you! Shread up the heaven's clouds as you know how - show em how it's done!!
