While we were walking from our parking spot to the concert(long walk) some guys were jay walking. The cops told them to get back on the side walk but they blew them off, at that point one of the officers said "dont ignore me I'll tase You"

My sons reaction was "dad hes gonna tase that guy lets watch"

Seems like they whip those things out for everything now.

Tasers are supposed to be used when you can't bring a guy down. For people like Hells Angels, body builders etc. Not for a guy in a bathroom stall... I can possibly understand the pepper spray, but why taze the guy if he isn't fighting back?

After not getting a response, they used some pepper spray under the door to make him comply. Cops are trained how to address various situations. Perhaps if these cops tried to listen to the guy in the bathroom they would be able to tell he was obviously deaf. Unfortunately, these cops used force first and asked questions later. These cops obviously require much more training.

I think either the guy wasn't as mentally handicapped as the article would have you believe (which is why the cops would have still taken him to jail)... OR the guy should probably not have been there by himself.

I agree that various police personnel have been heavy-handed in many situations, but I don't necessarily think this was one of them. So the guy experienced a little temporary discomfort... the police were trying to prevent a scenario where they break the door down and get shot or stabbed... it could have been pretty ugly. They didn't know. What would you have done? I think they handled this well, seeing as how nobody was hurt.

The bullshit about the cop threatening to taser someone for jaywalking is ridiculous though. Is there anyone here who HASN'T jaywalked and thinks one ought to be tasered for doing so? Talk about a power trip.

Quite aware of the training I go through.

But how is a deaf guy really gonna hear cops banging on the door? Might make that kinda hard to answer someone when you don't hear them talking to you.

Anyhoo, as I've posted before I think training is everything, and I don't mean marksmanship and the like. Training and discipline. Who's qualified to give it and who's willing to pay for it? If we can train 19 year-olds to board Russian fishing trawlers, we can train police.

In the old days?? Well considering the taser comes before hands on our force continuum, either a "guiding" hand or a possible citation.

ETA: If it wasn't for the taser, a lot more people would be partaking in an involuntary lead diet. You can only talk someone down so much. If someone has already made up their mind that they are going to try to kill you, then you have to take action. Action is faster than reaction. We do what we can to have the upper hand. One of my brother officers was shot the day before yesterday. I don't take assholes breaking out weapons on us lightly.

I don't think many cops would force the jaywalking issue, unless there was a serious safety issue. A lot of people like to lord their power over others, NOT just cops... it just so happens that jobs of that nature do seem to attract guys/gals with that personality. Not all of them, clearly, are weeded out in the recruitment process...
