We've all got guitars, who's got banjos, ukuleles, mandolins, pedal steels etc????

I'd love to get into banjo playing. In an Irish folk style and Bluegrass stuff.
Pedal steels sound amazing but it looks like a skill that would take a while to get hold of.

Re: We've all got guitars, who's got banjos, ukuleles, mandolins, pedal steels etc???

I have a basic Sho-Bud pedal steel with only 3 pedals and 1 knee lever. Pedals raise the pitch and knee levers drop it. You can step on 2 pedals at once to get new chords, and you can depress a pedal 1/2 way, plus a couple other non-obvious tricks. Takes some getting used to, as each limb does something different (LH holds the bar, RH picks, left foot on the pedals, right foot on the vol. pedal, plus knees on the knee levers). So you're a busy fuck when you play one! The only hard thing to do on it, for me anyway, is long scalar runs or complex melodies. Ironically, the more pedals there are, the easier it is to play.

Oh yeah- I have a bass too!

Never interested in really learning mando- the damn neck just feels too small. I did learn Battle Of Evermore a long time ago, though.

I have a banjo, a mandolin, and a pedal steel (you can hear some of my pedal steel work at the 'Big Sky' link in my sig). I play them all.

What do I win?

I'd a feeling you'd take the prize, Stranger.

Drude - you said "we've all got guitars". I said "we do!?". 'twas a joke. Well, no, it really wasn't.

I've got a mandolin from the 1940's from Montgomery Ward. I was just thinking about putting some strings on it and learning how to play it. It would add a little flavor to recordings me thinks.

You really should do it - it's a cool instrument, once you get past the odd tuning (all fifths, like a violin).

The one I've got is an early Fifties Harmony Monterey. One of my nieces found it in a junk shop, bought it for two bucks (!!!) and had a bridge and new tuners installed, and presented it to me as a Christmas present in '99. It looks just like this one:

It may be the coolest thing I've ever gotten for Christmas.

Pick up one of these:

I have one and play it all the time. It is a McSpadden Mountain Dulcimer and it is a lot of fun. If you can whistle a melody you can play the darn thing. you can do all the Irish / mountain music you want and you already know how to play it (you just don't know it yet).

BTW - That is not me - just a google search image

I have a banjo, it's a blast once you start getting some rolls working. I kind of want to work some fingerpicks & banjo rolls into my guitar playing, but I have a baby due in 2 weeks so I don't see it happening soon...

My folks had a mountain dulcimer, it's a cool sound.

i used to have a banjo... i plan on getting another one sometime in the next year or two... they are really fun to play, and easy to learn if you've ever done any finger picking

Re: We've all got guitars, who's got banjos, ukuleles, mandolins, pedal steels etc???

I've got a banjo (in pretty poor shape), a decent Washburn mandolin, 6 or 7 violins (only 1 or 2 in working order...played classical for 10+ years, and they do tend to accumulate), and the crappiest ukulele you'll ever see, which is primarily used as a wall decoration.

Oh, and a piano and an electric organ, but they're not really in the same category.

BTW, first post here, so Hi.

Have a nice kentucky mandolin that I love to play. I played in a bluegrass band years ago and our mando player was unbelievable as well as our dobro player. The joke with the rest of us was that we just played the background music for these dudes to do runs over. I remember talking with the mando player because he did a run I have never heard before and when asked about it he replied that he had about 20 runs that he could introduce to the song we just finished and he wasnt kidding. We had about 50 bluegrass standards down and I mean forwards, backwards, sideways....as well as a few real good sounding originals. I loved being in this band but always felt we were holding these guys back as they were way better players than us. Love those kinds of instruments.
