Re: Biggest Tax In American History

Quote:
Even as Democrats have promised that this cap-and-trade legislation won't pinch wallets, behind the scenes they've acknowledged the energy price tsunami that is coming. During the brief few days in which the bill was debated in the House Energy Committee, Republicans offered three amendments: one to suspend the program if gas hit $5 a gallon; one to suspend the program if electricity prices rose 10% over 2009; and one to suspend the program if unemployment rates hit 15%. Democrats defeated all of them.

Quote:
The whole point of cap and trade is to hike the price of electricity and gas so that Americans will use less. These higher prices will show up not just in electricity bills or at the gas station but in every manufactured good, from food to cars. Consumers will cut back on spending, which in turn will cut back on production, which results in fewer jobs created or higher unemployment. Some companies will instead move their operations overseas, with the same result.

I agree with you totally on this, its a scam and another way for the Govt., and big business to make boat loads of cash.

The ship is listing hard to port, Joe. No need to re-arrange the deck chairs.

* he was elected on the back of a preference deal that, combined with the proportional voting system used in our senate, saw him come in at no. 6 on the ticket in Victoria.
* the conditions alluded to above no longer exist.
* his term expires in 2010, and he has zero chance of being re-elected.
* he is nominally independent, but votes Tory on nearly everything.
* he is widely regarded as a joke in this country.

His stance on the emissions trading legislation Strassel referred to is pernicious at best. He has been provided with the best scientific advice available, but prefers to listen to think tanks funded by the big coal and oil companies. That is what he was doing in the US. He is bought.

The book by Plimmer, also referred to in the article, was eagerly awaited by the extreme denialist nut jobs, and lampooned by everybody else. It is not part of a rising tide of skepticism, but simply part of the denialist rearguard action.

The legislation referred to above has been delayed in the Senate because the government elected in Nov 2007 does not command a majority in the Senate. The two 'independents' and the opposition can combine to form a majority of one. The opposition took a soft-cock denialist position, then came around to the science, but wanted to delay action, then wanted to amend the legislation, etc etc. They have simply done what they always said they'd do: block it. There are a couple of constitutional circuit breakers that can settle this issue, but the fact of the matter is that the govt's intended introduction date of 2010 was always subject to getting the legislation through Parliament, which meant the opposition would have to be on board.

The delay is a reflection of the party political realities of this country as they have existed since before the last federal election (i.e. late 2007). This is not new. The Tories are in the pocket of big business and don't want to see any action on this, even though there is more that 75% approval among the electorate. There is not a rising tide of skepticism, merely the realities of the mechanics of getting laws made. Without a majority in the Senate, this legislation was going to come a cropper unless the opposition could be brought round.

As Bismark said, you should never see what goes into making law, or sausages.

Strassel does not have a clue what the fuck she is talking about.

Quote:
Minority Leader John Boehner (R-Ohio) had a few choice words about House Speaker Nancy Pelosi's (D-Calif.) landmark climate-change bill after its passage Friday.

When asked why he read portions of the cap-and-trade bill on the floor Friday night, Boehner told The Hill, "Hey, people deserve to know what's in this pile of s--t."

Another job-killing bill with a lot of garbage thrown in that nobody will fully read, yet vote in favor of anyway.
