Does anyone actively study music?

Hey all,

I was just curious, who's out there studying with a teacher? I went to college for music, and studied with many teachers into my early 20's, but now as I am 38, I find myself starved for some new knowledge. THe youtube lessons are great, but I find myself less focused.

I am now looking for a jazz instructor to help take my playing to the next level. It's funny because I am a rock teacher, and have a roster of students, but like Randy Rhoades, I feel like you never should stop learning.

Re: Does anyone actively study music?

I wish that I had time to continue some music study for myself. I teach also, and was a music major in college. It'd be cool to get into jazz. Big +1 on the never stop learning...that's one of my favorite things about music...always something new to learn.

Re: Does anyone actively study music?

Always a student... but no time or money for a teacher these days.

Lately I've been studying the history of music theory, which can get pretty damn esoteric at points. It honestly a primarily academic exercise as I'm not really getting anything I can immediately translate into playing, but I think it's helpful in helping me see the bigger picture and it's definitely interesting to me.

This is the text I'm using:
Amazon.com: The Cambridge History of Western Music Theory (The Cambridge History of Music): Thomas Christensen: Books Amazon.com: The Cambridge History of Western Music Theory (The Cambridge History of Music): Thomas Christensen: Books
. It's pretty intense.

Re: Does anyone actively study music?

It's certainly expensive, the instuctor I am looking at charges around 100 an hour, but the way I look at it is, poor in the wallet rich in the soul.

To me, at this point, what I want to focus on is developing my voice with improvisation. I feel that I have the tools, ie good chops, good equipment, understanding of chord/note relationships, some melody, etc.. The hard part is to be able to speak it, and have something explosive to say. There are guys out there like Jeff Beck, Carl Verheyen, Robben Ford, Holdsworth, Greg Howe, Carlton, etc that really have that voice. Part of it is the obvious, improvise, but the other is that education of concepts, intervals, phrasing, timing, etc. That is conceptual ideas that can be instructed.

Ok, Im droning.. LOL

Re: Does anyone actively study music?

I have a doctorate in music, and sometimes I feel like I don't know shite. Been out of the music biz for 31 years, and began playing guitar 3 years ago. Took lessons for 9 months, but now I use backing tracks and method books plus alot of practice to get better. Writing new songs challenges your creative and technical abilities - music theory, composition, cultural and artistic perspectives. I love writing songs when I have time as it combines everything.
