How to Travel at Warp Speed
![]() "Two Baylor University physicists believe they have an idea that can turn traveling at the speed of light from science fiction to science, and their idea does not break any laws of physics. Dr. Gerald Cleaver, associate professor of physics at Baylor, and Dr. Richard Obousy, a Baylor post-doctoral student, theorize that by manipulating the space-time dimensions around the spaceship with a massive amount of energy, it would create a "bubble" that could push the ship faster than the speed of light. To create this bubble, the Baylor physicists believe manipulating the 11-dimension would create dark energy. Cleaver said positive dark energy is responsible for speeding up the universe as time moves on, just like it did after the Big Bang, when the universe expanded faster than the speed of light. "Think of it like a surfer riding a wave," said Cleaver, who co-authored the paper with Obousy about the new method. "The ship would be pushed by the bubble and the bubble would be traveling faster than the speed of light." The method is based on the Alcubierre drive, which proposes expanding the fabric of space behind a ship into a bubble and shrinking space-time in front of the ship. The ship would not actually move, rather the ship would sit in between the expanding and shrinking space-time dimensions. Since space would move around the ship, the theory does not violate Einstein's Theory of Relativity, which states that it would take an infinite amount of energy to accelerate an object faster than the speed of light. String theory suggests the universe is made up of multiple dimensions. Height, width and length are three dimensions, and time is the fourth dimension. Scientists believe that there are a total of 10 dimensions, with six other dimensions that we can not yet identify. A new theory, called M-theory, takes string theory one step farther and states that the "strings" actually vibrate in an 11-dimensional space. It is this 11th dimension that the Baylor researchers believe could help propel a ship faster than the speed of light. The Baylor physicists estimate that the amount of energy needed to influence the extra dimensions is equivalent to the entire mass of Jupiter being converted into energy. "That is an enormous amount of energy," Cleaver said. "We are still a very long ways off before we could create something to harness that type of energy." Warp Speed Could Become A Reality |

I'm going to stick with my Harley for now. This one might be a while to market.

Re: How to Travel at Warp Speed
This stuff fascinates me. I have been reading the books of Feymans lectures and similar. It's not easy to understand some stuff and I often have to read it a few times to get a grasp of the space and time relativity stuff and when it gets to quantum mechanics I have still to fully grasp it, but I'm getting there. Most of it blows your away your ingrained instincts, and what you understand about physics, out of the windows and back again.
The speed at which you travel out of the windows depends of course on your 'frame of reference'

Now lets think about that ![]() if e=mc˛ then thats:- mass of Jupitor (1.8987 × 10˛⁷ KG) times the speed of light (186,000 Miles per second or 670616700 mph) squared hmmm, quite a lot then. Currently, what amount of mass are the nuclear fusion scientists working on as far as turning mass into energy goes? isn't it one atom or so, using high powered lazers? and they still haven't actually done it yet. Still, theoretically, mind blowing.. |

Re: How to Travel at Warp Speed
The car actually wouldn't move. Space would move around the car. Get some englun and think real hard about it.

Re: How to Travel at Warp Speed
If that would work it would be cool!
That stuff is way over my head, but one thing bugs me about those theoretical discoveries. You know, there comes one guy (or a group of scientists) and says, 'Look, we have this string theory and now we have 10 dimensions. We don't know what 6 of them are, but they exist!'. Then comes another guy (or group of scientists) and says, 'Hey folks, we have worked on your string theory with its 10 dimensions and ,even though we don't know what 6 of the 10 dimensions are, we just added an 11th. We don't know what that dimension is, but it enables us to travel faster than light!' Isn't that strange, or am I just plain dumb? |

Re: How to Travel at Warp Speed
GEO, I believe this is the same stuff Bob Lazar talks about alien craft moving through space. It pulls its destination to them (by bending the space fabric)and then lets all that space spring behind them. You don't move, space does. A gravitational device.
