Yeah, what a great guy.....

Vice President Urges People To Avoid Airplanes, Classrooms, Malls and Subways Because Of Swine Flu - wcbstv.com

Quote:
Vice President Joe Biden may not be a doctor, but he dispensed curious medical advice on the morning network news shows Thursday, advising Americans to avoid "confined places," such as airplanes, malls and classrooms. And while he did not mention them specifically, his admonition apparently also included subways, confined spaces used by tens of thousands of New Yorkers and tourists daily
Quote:
Meanwhile in New York City, Biden's comments seemed to sound the bell of alarm. For tens of thousands of New Yorkers and tourists the subway system is the only possible form of transportation. Mayor Michael Bloomberg, who is widely known to ride the city's subway system to work on a daily basis, is doing so as normal. Bloomberg is expected to ride the 4, 5 or 6 line train from Gracie Mansion to City Hall, where he will then give a press conference on the latest swine flu developments. His gesture will surely help quell the anxiety many New Yorkers are dealing with as the fear of a global pandemic has spread.

Yeah, I think the media and the government are definitely in collusion over this deliberate tactic to scare people over hog flu.

It makes me wonder...usually when the media and the gov't are going out of their way to report crap like this, there's typically something ELSE going on that's really big news that they don't want you to know about.

I wonder what it is.

Re: OMG Flu Outbreak Hits Level 5

There's even panic over here. You've only got to sneeze on a bus and you're set upon by the passengers and beaten to within an inch of your life.

Seriously though our tosspot government is writing to every single one of us and posting us all face masks which a doctor on the tv this morning said offered absolutely no protection at all.

Epidemic means it affects MANY people, Pandemic means it affects people in many different locations, even if it is relatively few people.

I think this panic should be put to rest. Yeah many of us will get this flu in the fall. And then we will be resistant to future exposure. I hope the WHO relaxes a bit, nothing wrong with being prepared, but then we should ALWAYS be prepared, shouldn't we?

What reason would they have to tell everyone to stay home? Isn't the economy in the shitter? Shouldn't we be out spending money, instead of hoarding and trying to 'survive'?

This is the worst advice I've ever heard. Avoid public transportation? HA! Why not just put up signs everywhere that say "Abandon all hope, ye who enter here".

Clearly.

Swine flu hasn't even killed 1/1000000000000000000000000th the amount of people the regular flu has. This whole thing reeks of bullshit.

Re: OMG Flu Outbreak Hits Level 5

The CDC Live Blog comments suggest that H1N1 isn't considered as such a big deal:

11:43 Keep in mind a piece of context: Even routine, seasonal flu is associated with 36,000 deaths per year in the U.S. So more deaths from the swine flu are also likely."

11:56 Influenza travels very easily person to person. “What I expect to see here is ongoing transmission in states.” “I would love to see the same types of cases we’re seeing, which are primarily the less severe cases.”

11:57 “It’s premature to say anything about virulence.” Researchers are looking at how virulent this strain is likely to be.

11:58 Preparedness: U.S. has been planning for a pandemic, but “microbes don’t read the plan.” Still, preparation for flu pandemic means state and local agencies start out with a basic level of understanding.

12:03 Computer modeling suggested that if you find a potential pandemic strain starting at distant shores, and you quickly implemented strict entry screening, you might be able to delay the entry of a pandemic virus by a few weeks. But once a virus is already inside the country, as it is now, those measures don’t have any added value.

12:05 A reporter asks about Biden’s comment that he would tell his family members not to fly. Besser’s answer: “I think flying is safe, going on the subway is safe. People should go out and live their lives.” But those with fever and flu-like symptoms should not fly.

I'm a Doctor (Internal Medicine) practicing in NJ and have had my eye on the new strain of flu for the last week or so. My family and I are traveling this Sunday (Disney cruise!) But we are taking Tamiflu with us. Use your better judgement, some caution, be prepared!

Swine Flu - US Very Concerned Over Outbreak

US medical authorities expressed strong concern Friday about an unprecedented multi-strain swine flu outbreak that has killed at least 60 people in Mexico and infected seven people in the United States.

“It’s very obvious that we are very concerned. We’ve stood up emergency operation centers,” Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) spokesman Dave Daigle told AFP.

One major source of concern was that the virus included strains from different types of flu.

“This is the first time that we’ve seen an avian strain, two swine strains and a human strain,” said Daigle, adding that the virus had influenza strains from European and Asian swine, but not from North American swine.

In 11 of 12 reported human cases of swine influenza (H1N1) virus infection in the United States from December 2005 to February 2009, the CDC has documented direct or indirect contact with swine.

But the seven known cases of the previously undetected strain in the United States — five from California and two from Texas — did not have contact with pigs. The seven people infected have all recovered from the flu.

“We have determined that this virus is contagious and is spreading from human to human,” the CDC said on its website. “However, at this time, we have not determined how easily the virus spreads between people.”

Local and state health officials were interviewing not just the people who were infected but the people with whom they had contact, Daigle noted.

Officials were looking for the source of the infection, Daigle said, adding that US health officials were due to receive samples from Mexico that would be tested at a lab at the centers based in Atlanta, Georgia.

The World Health Organization (WHO) has identified swine influenza as a potential source of a human flu pandemic. Pandemics usually occur every 20 years.

“Our experts and others are saying are not saying it’s not a matter of whether but when. And we are past

In response to an intensifying outbreak in the United States and internationally caused by a new influenza virus of swine origin, the World Health Organization raised the worldwide pandemic alert level to Phase 5External Web Site Policy. on April 29, 2009. A Phase 5 alert is a “strong signal that a pandemic is imminent and that the time to finalize the organization, communication, and implementation of the planned mitigation measures is short.”

The United States Government has declared a public health emergency in the United States. CDC’s response goals are to reduce transmission and illness severity, and provide information to help health care providers, public health officials and the public address the challenges posed by this emergency. CDC is issuing and updating interim guidance daily in response to the rapidly evolving situation. CDC’s Division of the Strategic National Stockpile (SNS) continues to send antiviral drugs, personal protective equipment, and respiratory protection devices to all 50 states and U.S. territories to help them respond to the outbreak. The swine influenza A (H1N1) virus is susceptible to the prescription antiviral drugs oseltamivir and zanamivir. In addition, the Federal Government and manufacturers have begun the process of developing a vaccine against this new virus.
