Lethal Combination!

"Heavens to Murgatroid!" cried Clapton. "Jumping Jehosafats!" cried Pagey. "Praise the Lord!" sang Billy G. "What the F**k was that??" asked "Blind" Lemon Jefferson.

All reactions to hearing for the first time a late fifties Les Paul plugged into an overdriven Marshall stack. Like potassium- nitrate and sulphur, bows and arrows, petrol fumes and a lit match or Matron and a bottle of Smirnoff when she's got "the painters" in it is a Lethal Combination. Nothing could beat it then and probably can't now.

But what's your favourite Lethal Combination? Would it be a late sixties Strat' played through a Fender reverb? Or a 4001 Ricky wound to the max through an Orange Superbass and moving the building off its frickin' footings! Holy Moley I ain't heard that in a while!

I don't know much about this new fangled gear so edjermacate me. What do you use that nails "the sound" for you? A Les Paul of some description with what? Pray tell............Or even better post pics of the gear

Re: Lethal Combination!

My Wolfetone equipped Edwards Les Paul through the Blackheart Little Giant or the Marshall DSL-401 with a little Barber Direct Drive overdrive and a pinch of Line 6 Verbzilla reverb does the trick for me.

Re: Lethal Combination!

Cookie Boy....I wish I could answer this question....but I can't.

I don't really consider myself an a-typical Les Paul player. Unlike a lot of folks, I'm not much a meat and potatoes guy when it comes to rhythm guitar. I rarely play power chords. I like playing funk riffs and barre chords mixed in with Iommi one-note melodic riffs. It's screwed up style that if offered towards metaphorical comparison would be akin to a hammered piece of dogshit spewed up by a starving sewer rat after an unsuccesful bout of digestion.

But...that's they way I play.

And it's about the song. Sometimes the song calls for a thin, nasally tone that just cuts through the mix....sometimes the song calls for deep tones that threaten a bowel movement.

You'd laugh at this, but one of the best tones I ever got out of a studio was through a 15 watt Squier champ amp with an Ibanez metal guitar and Tube King. Right now I play the Marshall (as many LP'ers do) because it's such a gorgeous, growling beast of a sound. But sometimes I like that cold feel and softer touch from a solid state.

I'm having a love affair right now with my les pauls, but I'm a restless soul...eventually something else will grab me, and I'll gorge on that until I've had my fill. But ideally I wish I could gravitate towards 4 or 5 "great tone combos" that would act as the main ingredients for songs.

Lately I've just been playing my archtop unplugged. I doubt I'll find everything I want out of that....but it's fun to always push yourself....and find enough textures to keep it all lively and interesting.

Re: Lethal Combination!

And of course it's all to do with your mood. Some days you want to shake the tiles off the roof other days you want to thin it out with a Tele' and an old Vox AC30 (one of my favourite lethal combinations!! ) and make the local cats dive for cover!

Re: Lethal Combination!

While I love my LP through 80's JCM 800, I brought my LP in to a shop(now unfortunately out of business) to try it through an Orange Rockverb stack. That was pretty lethal. It just sounded plain...doomy. Sustained doom. I never really tried Oranges, but that was something I enjoyed.

Re: Lethal Combination!

True, it wasn't a vintage one, but I loved it. To my ears, they have a more pronounced midrange, much different from the ENGL/Boogie sound that all my friends seem to favor. O love Orange cabs.

Re: Lethal Combination!

Spent a couple of hours at a friend's place yesterday, playing with his Marshall stacks. The B7 through a cranked 100W Vintage Modern was damn near a religious experience.

Freakin' thing wiggled the little hairs, and made my arms itch from the sound pressure. Just can't get that from any combo I've ever tried.

I think my standard, a marshall, and a Dunlop Hendrix fuzz face will do it for me. All I haft to do is get the pedal and amp.

Re: Lethal Combination!

My alpine white '04 LP Custom plugged into a Marshall tube head (I have a DSL-100 with a 6100 on the way). Nothing spells "Rock n' Roll" like an LP and a Marshall stack (my apologies to all you fans of Fenders, VOXes, and that non-P90 single-coil sound).
