Now answering computer related questions.

I know that most of you have computers (since you are posting on MLP duh). Well now I am offering my services to you for a limited time only. I am sort of a wiz when it comes to computers. I have experience with windows, Linux , and a little bit of mac OSX. So if you have a question feel free to ask and I will try to answer it for you. Also if you know anything about computers check in and see if you can answer some of the questions.

Re: Now answering computer related questions.

My brother just got his computer up and running. His connection seems to be good, as it appears files are loading at a good speed, such as on Youtube. However, when we try to play the video, it goes for two seconds, then stops.
Would he perhaps need to upgrade his Flash player?

Re: Now answering computer related questions.

I have never worked with IBM Job control language. I currently only now a little bit of actual languages. I started this thread because I am constantly answering computing questions about friends problems with their operating system and or hardware related problems so I thought why not start a thread on MLP. If you have questions about using a Linux box or HTML and CSS I may be able to help you out.

EDIT: see my post below

Re: Now answering computer related questions.

Yes you most likely need to update flash player to the most recent. I was having problems with this on my linux machine previously and updating the Flash player will probably help. Also you could try making sure you have the most recent version of the browser you are using. I highly recommend Firefox if you want to try a different browser.

How often should I defrag my disk, and any optimization tricks for Vista?

Re: Now answering computer related questions.

There is no definate answer for how often you should defrag. It is like how often should i change strings. I would do it more often if you are constantly installing or removing stuff and less if your not. As far as optimization goes with Vista turn off anything you dont use. I would turn off automatic updates and only update occasionally followed immediately after by a defrag. Also if you are using the installation that was on your computer from the factory i would recommend reloading it because in most cases the factory puts a bunch of extra crap on as well.

Re: Now answering computer related questions.

I did re-load my computer from scratch because something odd was going on, not really sure what was happening. It's like a brand new computer, but of course we all want more speed. I've got a 320 Gig HD and 4 gig of RAM, can't be happier with my labtop.

Re: Now answering computer related questions.

OS/2 Warp was and is not the greatest os ever made. Linux is.

EDIT: OS/2 was a joint IBM Microsoft operating system. However Microsoft went on to make Windows and IBM supported OS/2 until 2006.

If I may interject here...
I have been using Diskeeper on all of my machines for 2 years now and it keeps your disks defragged on the fly and does not hog recources.
Absolutly recommended if you move large files and videos and do a lot of deleting.
You will never do a manual defrag again.

Re: Now answering computer related questions.

Thanks bfcg for the suggestion. All Anti-Virus programs are system hogs. Mcafee is one of the worst though. I have used Norton, AVG free, And Anti spyware bot. Norton was OK, AVG was very good for a free one although recent reports say it is not good anymore. So far out of the three I like Anti Spyware bot. It doesnt give you notifications and I run it in the background on my only windows comp a 1.7Ghz P4 so it is not that bad of a system hog.

Re: Now answering computer related questions.

Ok so i don t have to write all this stuff down here ya go.
Get A Static IP! How to set a static ip address for your computer (for p2p, web servers, bittorrent, etc) for Linux, Windows, and Mac.

This should help. You will most likely want to scroll down to whatever operating system you have instead of reading all the crap before that.

Re: Now answering computer related questions.

How's your DOS?

I currently have many tracks/midi setting of sampled music that I desperately NEED, like two weeks ago, on a 1980-ish PC, using Microsoft Studio. When booting up asks for OS disc... and we're talking 3.5 floppy.

Only shit like this happens to me.

It's the MAN!!!

Re: Now answering computer related questions.

Actually the cure is LINUX. It will run on any PC or MAC. I have even seen distros that run on Commodore 64s and older computers. You can run it on cellphones, mp3 players, flashdrives pretty much anything. AND IT WORKS

Re: Now answering computer related questions.

Cool,
My mom likes to play games on her laptop, she got that text twist. When she first got it, it would go to full screen mode, then one day it wouldn't. She can still play it but not in full screen. When you click on the top right corner expander thing it just 'blinks' and stays half size. I tried going into its properties and menus to make it full screen but no dice. My mom keeps bugging me if I can figure it out but so far nothing. Vista by the way, any help??

Re: Now answering computer related questions.

Ok I dont know of a cure all for this but here is a few suggestions. Try reinstalling the game I have had programs do screwy stuff like this and reinstalling works most of the time. Check your graphics driver to make sure it is the most recent version. I did google your question but i did not find much. If possible and if all else fails try running the game from the command console and post the outcome. I dont even know if that is possible in vista but it is worth a try.
