He was my father's grandmother's grandfather's brother. Looking at it another way, Orville's brother's grandaughter married Sonny Williams (my dad's granddad). They had a daughter (my dad's mom). She had my dad out of wedlock. The custom then was to give the child the mother's mother's madian name. That name was Gibson.

When I started playing guitar as a teenager, my dad said that I could start my own guitar company and name it Gibson. They could not stop me from using my name. I did not know my relationship to Orville. I did not know that my father was born out of wedlock until my grandmother died when I was in my 30's.
