There are times in a person's life where things change. Sometimes for the worse but mostly for the better. In 1997 I had the opportunity to see a ton of Aerosmith shows. This was back in the day when tickets were 36 dollars a pop, student loans were in surplus and I was living pay check to pay check trying to get out of college.
I took guitar back in the day, and quit when my mom wanted me to play in the church.... ![]() . You gotta understand, when your a kid your more self conscious then when your an adult, if I had known better I would have just done it, but oh well. I mean I wanted to play Zeppeling, and I am learning the banana song?![]() Anyway, I bought my first guitar with my first real paycheck. It was a 1997 Joe Perry Lester. I bought it from L&M sight unseen, and have never gone back. Now I need to play a guitar before I buy it , but thats an entirely different topic.I was surfing the net today, and stumbled upon this picture. To this day, this is the picture that sums up the rock and roll experience for ME. It's what a Les Paul was made for. Looking at it today made me laugh, as it was the main picture on my CPU background for years. In fact I tried to model one of my guitars after it. Anyway here it is. What picture of a guitar / guitar player did it for you? ![]()

Cant say that it started it all, but this is one of my favorites:

Re: What started it all
I was 12 in 1976 and this guy did it for me. I was at that point where you go from being a kid reading comic books to a teenager listening to rock-n-roll. KISS was a natural fit for me (and about a million others my age) as they combined the best of both of these worlds. Of course, musically I soon grew to appreciate bands like Skynyrd, the Allmans, Molly Hatchet, etc. and my love of all things guitar grew accordingly.
But in the very beginning I begged the folks to buy me a guitar and amp. They finally agreed to get the amp if I saved my allowance that summer to get the guitar. I ended up getting a Les Paul copy (had to be like Ace!) from the Montgomery Wards catalog and they got me a Fender Vibro Champ (bought off my granddad). The guitar lasted about a year or two while I took lessons and then my guitar teacher loaned me a real Les Paul Custom 20th Anniversary from his collection (said it was time I got a better guitar). This lasted about a year while I saved my money to get my own Les Paul (about a 1975 Standard I got for $350 used). The amp ended up going back to my grandfather later and I got a Peavey Duece 212 (ala the Skynyrd influence) which I kept until college. By then my GAS pains were starting and I've lost track of all the guitars and amps I've been through since then... but I always end up back at the beginning... with a Gibson Les Paul ![]() And here's the "Skynyrd influence"...

Re: What started it all
Well I wanted to play because of Dad.
My first heroes were Clapton and Santana. Stevie Ray wrecked me as well.. but when I heard David Grissom it was over. That's everything I want to be as a player.

Davey Johnstone: Information and Much More from Answers.com
"Although guitarist Davey Johnstone is best known for being a longtime member of Elton John's band, he has guested on numerous other artist's recordings over the years and is widely regarded as one of rock's most versatile players. He began first as an acoustic/folk player doing session work in England, when one day producer Gus Dudgeon asked Johnstone to play on Bernie Taupin's self-titled 1970 solo album, which resulted in a meeting with John and playing on his 1971 classic Madman Across the Water. Johnstone and John hit it off and he was automatically welcomed into John's band full time, playing on many of his best-known hits over the years; Johnstone's playing could adapt from serene ballads ("Candle in the Wind"), to pop ("Crocodile Rock"), and even raging riff rockers ("Saturday Night's Alright for Fighting"). Word quickly got out to other artists about Johnstone's talents, resulting in numerous sessions from the '70s all the way to the next millennium, including Joan Armatrading, Kiki Dee (Johnstone's future wife), Leo Sayer, Alice Cooper, the Who, Meat Loaf, Stevie Nicks, Yvonne Elliman, Bob Seger, Rod Stewart, George Jones, Belinda Carlisle, and Vonda Shepherd, among many others. But despite all of his extracurricular work, Johnstone has always made working with Elton John his top priority, playing on over 20 albums with the flamboyant piano man. Johnstone has issued a lone solo album during his career, the obscure 1973 release Smiling Face. ~ Greg Prato, All Music Guide" ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() Then the guitarist who changed my life in many other ways, Michael Hedges:

Re: What started it all
Great choices dwagar! When I was a child in the early seventies, my brother (who is 8yrs my elder) brought home Led Zepplin 4 and I was hooked on Jimmy Page. I later in the '80's heard SRV. Then Mike Bloomfield, the "Beano" album with Clapton, Cream. Now it's Muddy Waters, B.B King, Albert King and so on. I keep going further back in time.

Re: What started it all
My family moved to Macon, GA in Dec of 1969 when I was twelve. Some of the older kids in the neighborhood were always talking about this great band with an incredible guitarist that moved to town. By the time I figured out the significance of what was going on in my new "home town", Duane Allman was gone. The other Capricorn recording artists like Toy Caldwell (Marshall Tucker Band) and Ricky Hirsch (Wet Willie Band) were influences on my playing style, but it was hearing the recordings of Duane Allman, and the impact of his tragic passing on me and my friends, that lit the fire in me to learn how to play guitar. Sad thing is, I never actually got to see him play...

Re: What started it all
I was 10 and my dad was listening to Ozzy Osbourne's "No More Tears", it was late at night and i woke up from it, so i got up to see what it was and i went over to him and watched the whole song. The solo was my influence to play guitar, i thought it was so cool. so that year for christmas i got a guitar.

Re: What started it all
I think its hard to say what bands/guitarists have really influenced me or made me want to pick up a guitar.
Some of my favs, new and old... ZZ, Boston, Priest, Circa Survive, Motley Crue, Thrice, The Fall of Troy, Between the Buried and Me, RX Bandits, Hot Cross, Saosin, etc.. Idk how many dudes on here will know some of them, but those are some of my favorites. I think I have a pretty eclectic taste in music, but for the most part... I either want it sensual and calm, or hard and fast! Or a little of both if possible
