The Smithereens are coming to town---I'm in!

The Smithereens are going to be playing in West Palm Beach, on the waterfront on Sunday. I haven't seen the band in a few years, but I will be there this weekend.

They are one of my favorite, under appreciated bands of the 80's for sure-

Guitar driven rock and roll for all ages-

I will have chairs, a blanket and cooler (if allowed) on Sunday-

Here's a link for anybody close that wants to see them-

Re: The Smithereens are coming to town---I'm in!

I remember the first time I read an article about the band before seeing them live.

Described as "AC/DC meets the Beatles."

Great band - enjoy!

interesting....i just recently pulled out their album "Especially For You" that i had not heard in over a decade.
great to listen to those classics like "Wall Of Sleep" and "Groovy Tuesday" and "Time and Time Again" "Blood and Roses" etc.
def. one of the better American bands of the 80's.

I saw them last summer as a small local theater and was able to stand pretty much right in front of the stage. Really good show. The bass player jumped off the stage and was playing half way up the isle.

Neo-I would call the "Cheap Trick meets The Beatles". But that's where they come from. Rock solid, guitar driven pop/rock songs. Jim Babjak is a great guitar player.

My high school girlfriend loved them, saw them live a couple times back in the late 1980s. Great solid pop rock music...

Re: The Smithereens are coming to town---I'm in!

One of the first bands that got me looking seriously at Rickenbackers.

Fast forward 15 years and I finally bought my 381-V69.

And yes - that little niche of rock?
Songs like "Only a Memory," "House We Used to Live In," "A Girl Like You" and "Blues Before and After"?
That stuff really resonated with me.
Same for some of the early REM stuff.
Then I noticed Tom Petty was using Rics as well in his early days.

There was more to a Rickenbacker than mellow jangly stuff like the Byrds.

I was thinking I saw Smithereens twice - maybe only once in the mid-nineties.
Tiny club - packed to the ceiling, and they blew the roof off the place.

Great show.

And Babjak did not play all the leads either.
Turns out DiNizio is more than a strumming singer - he can rip it up too.

Re: The Smithereens are coming to town---I'm in!

I was all up in punk/hardcore when they came out, but I saw the Rickenbackers and I was hooked. I started as a Beatles fan and wanted a new Beatles. I was disappointed though when I saw them live in 1990 and they played.......................

a friggin strat and an SG! Only (original) bassist Mike mesaros played a Rickenbacker. I was pissed.

especially for you, green thoughts and 11 were friggin' incredible, if songwriting and Revolver-esque guitar hooks are yer bag, baby.

They had some great, great rock songs. I also really liked that mellow song they did with Belinda Carlisle, Blue Period.

First time I saw them it was Rics---and Babjak with a tele some-

Last time I saw them, DiNizio played a strat and BabJak played a Tele all night---

DiNizio can play and did indeed trade leads with BabJak more than once

They also have their first new CD of all original material in 12 years coming out as well.

I really do like these guys and always have.

Last time I saw them was at a festival and I took the entire family. After the show, within days, my two daughters asked me to put some Smithereens on their iPods

My youngest asked me and her guitar teacher to teach her "Girl Like You" and "Behind the wall of Sleep"

I saw them at the Rib America festival in Indy and I was blown away at how many fans they had there. When the band before them left the stage there was a mass pilgrimage to the stage and lawn---All of the sudden, thousands of Smithereens fans crawled out of the woodwork. It was a hell of a show and truthfully, an unexpected surprise for me. I loved them since I heard "Behind the Wall of Sleep" the first time way back in 84 or 85------I didn't realize how much of an underground following they had. It was a good day for me as a fan and for the Smithereens, as a band, as they rocked the house and really fed of the energy of the unexpected crowd---

I knew it was a crowd full of real fans when I kept hearing chants for "Whitecastle Blues"

Re: The Smithereens are coming to town---I'm in!

I'll throw a few out there and you can tell me which one it is--

They actually had several radio staples back in the day--

The first song I ever heard of theirs was an MTV video back in the day when MTV played music videos--

Here it is--

Here's another favorite of mine-

Probably their most popular song to date is Girl Like You-

Here's a good one-

Re: The Smithereens are coming to town---I'm in!

Great group from the home state!
i think Mr. Babjack owned my Marshall at one point... an acquaintance knows him, heard he's a good guy, briefly talked to him once when he had a local act in the early 2000's.
A Girl Like you is an all time classic.
they're like a harder version of R.E.M.
