Re: Treasure Detectives

I watched it. The guy that bought the guitar was supposed to be knowledgeable, but he thought that white Les Paul was one of Les' favorites. If he knew anything about Les Paul, he would know that Les' favorites were all low-impedance pickups, so it was just one of the 300 other guitars that were around the house because Gibson kept sending them.

Re: Treasure Detectives

The SG design was the reason Les ended his deal with Gibson to manufacture a "Les Paul Model."

The point is not the people who watch the show, but that the so-called knowledgeable guitar buyer who picked up the guitar at the Les Paul estate auction was convinced it was Les' favorite guitar merely because it was shown on the cover of the LP biography of a few years ago. When they told him there was nothing special about the instrument, it wasn't one that Les played and that it was just for a photo op, he walked out of the conference cursing the people that he had asked to find out the truth and threatened to sue them.

He'd paid ~$7,000 for a vanilla white LP no different than any you get right off the shelf and was convinced that it was worth at least $500,000.

Well, it's one of the reasons thrown around for him not renewing the 10 year contract when it expired, but it's not what Les says. He mentioned in his autobiography that the divorce was looming over him and he wanted to wait until that was finalized before he renewed the agreement with Gibson, so he took the opportunity presented him. I assume that means that he didn't want any future royalties from Gibson to go to Mary. Gibson even asked Les if it was OK to put the SG out without the Les Paul name on it during this time, and Les agreed. When the divorce was finalized, Les signed the new agreement. Les states there were no guitars with the Les Paul name produced during this hiatus between 1962 and most of 1965.

He didn't mention his opinion on the SG one way or the other in the book that I recall.

BTW, I'll have to own up to a slip of the wit here, it wasn't an SG on the show, it was a regular white Les Paul.
