Interesting Paypal Scam that almost got me....

So I have some pedals posted here, and a few other forums. I had a guy make an offer on two pedals. It was a very fair offer so I jumped on it. He then asked me if I could overnight the pedals since he had a gig tomorrow and all of his gear just got stolen. First red flag. I told him if he would gift me the money instead that I could swing the overnight shipping since it would save me a good deal on paypal fees. So the guy agrees. a couple hours go by and still no payment. So I tell him to hury up or your shit aint shippin tomorrow. Finally payment comes through. It isn't gift. I tell the guy that he's going to have to kick in the difference or I can refund him and he can resend as gift. He says, just don't worry about the overnight thing. COOL! Thats like 30 bucks back in my pocket! So then he asks me to ship to this other address because he moved and was living with his GF blah blah blah. Unconfirmed address of course. Another red flag. So I tell him I'm really a bit nervous about this transaction blah blah blah and we go back and forth and he explains why the address isn't confirmed etc. So I'm seeing green at this point and just want to pocket the money from the two pedals so I get them boxed up.

Well, this morning a member on here and that other forum contacted me and asked me if I had been dealing with this guy and if I thought it was weird? I told him I have been but I think everything might be ok. I do a little more digging just to be safe though.

I go back and look at the paypal transaction. Down in the notes it says "payment for racing headers, y pipe and some other car crap". So that's strike three. Now I just wanna see what your game is. So I emailed the paypal addy to see what was up.

Here's what this F*ckstick is doing. He sells imaginary car performance parts on a car forum for an amount that matches up to what he owes someone on a guitar forum for pedals. He tells the guy buying the car parts to send the payment to my paypal address. That way, if everything goes through, he get's his pedals and by the time the other guy figures out his parts aint coming, he files a paypal claim and I have to refund him. Meanwhile joe C0cksucker over there has made off with $350 worth of gear.

Now if I could only figure out a way to get this guy good....

Re: Interesting Paypal Scam that almost got me....

Ok I'll read it three more times 'cause I didn't get it the first time.

Tell me if I'm wrong... He buys from you and sells to another guy and has the guy pay you?

Is there a chance it is not a scam? I mean, maybe he really sold the parts to the guy and told him instead of paying him he should pay you. Don't know why he'd do that but isn't it a possibility?

I'm asking this because most of the time when I buy from eBay I ask the seller to ship to a different address. I do this to save on shipping because I don't live in the US but go there a lot, si I buy things and have the. Sent to my address there (which is unconfirmed as none of my credit cards have that one as billing address).

Am I acting suspicious? No seller has had a problem with that ever.

Did he give you an address for the pedals to be sent to? If so then you can send a box of shit to him.

Is there any chance he was actually sending the car parts to the other guy?

I'm the bad guy.

I go to a car forum and advertise some non-existant shit for sale. User Mustang1 says "Hey, I'm keen!". I say "ok, please stand by and I'll send you payment information.".

I then offer to buy a guitar from you, for the same amount of money, or thereabouts. I make the offer, you accept.

I then tell you "ok, I'm sending the money via Paypal".

I then tell Mustang1 to send his $100 to you, via Paypal. Only he thinks it's me, I just gave him your paypal ID.

You get payment, send guitar to his non-confirmed address.
Mustang1 sent his money but never gets his parts. He files a complaint, eventually. Paypal reverse the transaction. YOU now have no guitar and no money. Mustang1 got his money back. He got the guitar. You got ****ed.

There are some obvious ways to make this work better, the OP must have contacted the original payer at his paypal address, as opposed to the scammer? If that happens, you're in trouble.

Mustang1 ----> Cash ----> You.
You ----> Guitar ----> Scammer.
Mustang1 <---- Transcation reversed via paypal, money returned <---- You.

Mustang1 gets his money back
Scammer gets guitar.
You get shit.

Thanks dude. Just what I thought. But I was wondering if maybe there was any chance he was just trying to save on PayPal fees or something?

If it was legit you'd have to have all three parties on board with it. It's possible, but spectacularly unlikely. But you're right, possible.

If that is the case it's certainly a breach of trust.

Agreed. I wouldn't feel comfortable dealing with someone that didn't say everything at the start.

That would be against the forum rules. He's got to try and sort it out with the guy, then through the mods and then if they see there's no way of solving it and the planets are aligned the right way, only then you can post the name of a scammer.

Dude, if you had nothing to hide then you should have hidden nothing.

Just like I said before: I always have things shipped to a different address than my billin address. Sometimes it's to a friend's house or to his parents' house, mostly because the doorman at the place I stay at in the US is a dick and has lost packages before (it's my moms apt and I'm the one who uses it the most).

So I have 3 addresses in the US I give people when buying something. I always say that up front. I never make an offer without contacting the seller first and telling him this. No seller has ever had a problem with that but that's because I contact them before doing business and tell them shipping to my country would be costly and unsafe (things would probably get damaged or stolen).

Next time say it all up front, you have nothing to lose.

Those are the rules tho... Nobody can "out" another member until the mods have decided it is indeed a scam and that other members might be in danger of being scammed.

Good for you for coming clean. You weren't named and didn't have to.

Just take it as a lesson learned to always be upfront about everything.

Please, stop me if i'm being cynical, but is anyone else a little wary that the scammer and scamee both have, by MLP standards, very low amounts of posts? Something about this whole thread doesn't ring right. Not saying it's any particular party invloved, but i'm wary if the whole thing.
