FBI Moneypak ransomware virus

Yup, It got me ! Took a while but I was able to get rid of it by starting up in safe mode and running my Anti-Virus program.

BE CAREFUL !

What is the FBI Moneypak ransomware virus?

FBI Moneypak is ransomware that locks computer systems, alleges the computer user has been involved in illegal activity by the FBI (downloaded or distributed copyrighted material or viewed child pornography), and demands a penalty fine of $100 or $200 be paid to unlock the computer system within the allotted time of 72 hours by use of Moneypak cards. Moneypak is the prepaid credit cards you can purchase at Walmart or Walgreens type stores. The FBI Moneypak ransomware virus also states on the fake FBI page that you may see jail time if a fine is not paid in time.

Windows installer | Ubuntu

I did it that way so I could dual boot and not lose anything in my widows partition. You can get and burn a ISO and boot up and install Ubuntu over the entire disk. Firefox is the default browser but you can install Chrome to avoid having to deal with flash in Firefox.

Nope you will not lose anything if you back it all up. I backed up everything to an external hard drive. Downloaded ubuntu to a usb thumb drive. Bought a brand new blank hard drive and installed ubuntu on it. Then attached my external hard drive and took all my important stuff off and back on my new hard drive. Best thing I ever did. Just be weary, most programs are not made for linux. There are linux substitutes that work just like the windows versions for most commonly used programs. If there is a program that you absolutely have to have that doesn't work with linux, you can use wine (lets you run windows programs in linux).

Make the leap. You will not regret. I wish I would have done it earlier. It can be intimidating but just keep at it and you'll be good as gold in a couple weeks. Oh yeah, viruses and bullshit are nearly non-existant.

My last few laptops ran XP and windows 7 respectively, never had any major problems. Had a few infections that were remedied by decent anti malware apps.

Most infections are the result of clicking bad links.. If you're careful you should have few issues.

Totally agree... Win7 is very good and I like it...but not Win8. The upgrade price is nice until the end of Jan13. IMO 40$ is a good deal but the learning curve is a pain. Win8 is very fast but I don't know if it's worth 40.

Well.. it was pay $200 for windows 7 or free for linux. I could have used my current windows code but I would need a disc and I didn't even want to bother. Just so sick of getting viruses. From the most random of places too. My wife picked up a nasty one from a knitting/fabric website. WTF!!?

Re: FBI Moneypak ransomware virus

I just removed the FBI virus from a friend's computer. It got a BSOD every time I tried to go into safe mode so I ran Malwarebytes from Hiren's boot disk. I thought that did the trick as the system booted fine and sat there with no issue for a couple of hours. As soon as I plugged a network cable into it, blam, the fake FBI warning came up. I ended up downloading Malwarebytes and an update file for it while booted to the Hiren's disk, sticking it on the hard drive, and booting without the network cable connected. That allowed me to install it, update it with the downloaded update file, and run the scan. Whatta PITA.

Linux isn't for the ever day user. You have to compile drivers to in order get them to install. I'm running UBUNTU on a laptop and old laptop at that. I like it for what it is.

I've been running Windows a long time. I have never had my computer infected unintentionally. Now when I have installed programs for "Educational Purposes" you always take a chance when installing a program. Even then with the proper protection your computer should warn you.

That video should take care of it. The narrators are a little goofy but they give you the deetz. To answer your questions about security check out the 2 minute mark.

Yeah, it is terrible that the virus writers and hackers go after the predominate operating system in the world. Why would anyone bother with Mac since they are only 3% of users and Unix which is only 2% of users worldwide? Get a decent virus protection program and do not go to spurious websites.

Final thoughts on Windows 8....

What KP said. And to add to it, don't surf to porn, shareware or wallpaper web sites and you'll be fine.

Well, stick to known, major porn sites - I ain't giving up internet porn.

Re: FBI Moneypak ransomware virus

I've removed this from a few computers now....haha, buddies who swear they were not surfing porn. ya, ya...whatever.

It's simple to remove. Just boot into you BIOS screen, there should be an applet for "system restore" you might have to click through a few "advanced" screens but it's pretty self-explainitory....select a restore date (usually a few listed) and reboot.....BANG, done.
