which one of yall smoke some blue grass?

Now that I have a resonator for exactly 12 hours so far, my slide blues in open G is better than awful. It's actually bordering mediocre and I think in a week or 2 it may actually be considered decent. Hearing this instrument, it'd be a shame to not learn some bluegrass. That stuff is just a whole other world and I have no idea where to start. Who can turn me on to a good method book or dvd??? I don't want to get dueling banjos deliverance good, but would like to at least be able to get the foundation of the genre.

Round neck. I know the square neck is more for bluegrass, but I imagine I can learn the basics on roundneck. I don't plan on buying a squareneck.

I like round necks. You can still play a slide on them too. A little chickin' pickin', bends, a lot of runs or just claw hammer to start. Gret Fun. Congrats!!

I like DGDGBD, but I prefer DGDGBbD. You can go from minor to major with one finger and still slide around all sorts of open minor chords.

I have a glass slide. This one is stoneware and made in USA. Seems to have less string noise, by a little bit.

Re: which one of yall smoke some blue grass?

i love open tunings. open g my favorite for slide. open e is also a neat one.

gotta play with a THICK brass slide for gritty blues tone.

ive got 3 types of slide. glass, chrome and brass. the glass is great for squeaky clean slidework. very smooth. the chrome slide is very bright. id say my least favorite out of the bunch. my brass slide is my favorite because it has that "it" factor. ive noticed that as my technique improves and i am more precise with the placement of the slide, the brass also gives my notes more sustain.

Listen to "Will the Circle be Unbroken" by the Nitty Gritty Dirt Band. The 1972 original.
Merle Travis, Doc Watson, Vasar Clements (fiddle), Roy Acuff, Earl Skruggs, etc. played on it. It's a catalog of Old Time Country music.

Re: which one of yall smoke some blue grass?

Congrats, Joey, purdy fiddle!

Also, some great clips upthread.

I always faked my way through Bluegrass sessions, something that I got away with because it was only a Bluegrass "feel" that the producer was looking for, buried in a Pop or Rock arrangement.

Lemme know if you ever need or want any advice on playing Blues or Rock in standard tuning.

I can't touch the Bluegrass but I love listening to it. I've seen Cody Kilby live a couple of times (as a part of Kentucky Thunder). He's the Paul Gilbert of acoustic guitar.

Re: which one of yall smoke some blue grass?

I also use several different kinds of slides on bluesy roundneck dobro, but the thick brass sounds best with a wood-body guitar. To me, glass slides sound best with metal-body dobros on blues.

For SQUARENECK dobro, listen to anything by JERRY DOUGLAS. He's the current king of the instrument, though there are many good pickers out there.

As for bluegrass, I didn't play squareneck with all the other instruments on this song, and I've always wished I had. Maybe someday I'll re-record it and get some dobro on there.

Man, i'm from a Bluegrass background away over here in scotland, so it travels well

theres some good bluegrass songs here, and see if any pubs/bars have trad style sessions going on, you'll learn alot quickly there, they throw you in the deep end and eventually, you'll swim. learn a g major scale and your set for Bluegrass stardom

Bluegrass anyone?

oh, and one last thing, bluegrass guitar smokes!

tony rice (from the first video) does some amazing bluegrass guitar parts and licks, every player should learn some of his stuff, it's epic.

Yep! Like I always tell people who ask me, if banjo was as hard to play as it sounds no one could play it. If you can play guitar, and understand how chords work together, you can play Scruggs-style banjo, too.

OK. I spent literally all day, about 10 hours with my hands on the resonator and 3 slides. Ceramic, brass and glass. Glass = silky. Ceramic = loud and clear. Brass = gritty and precise. I think I like the brass one the best. Also, I think Im going balls in and maybe learning some banjo.

I play some slide in standard tuning, though ... not all that different from open G.
