That vampire one scared the hell out of me when I was a kid, and remember the one with the swamp creature that lived in the sewer?

"Chicago, 1942. Elliot Ness and his men moved in for the kill!"
Robert Stack as Elliot Ness in the original Untouchables. That was the best show. I love how ALL the bad guys got killed in that end.

"Rico, get the car!"

We Brits cannot think of the Rockford Files as anything other than the rhyming slang.

Most shows are based on scripted story, where anything can be written as plot and any clue and subsequent 'key' in the plot can simply appear at any time.. Columbo is very unique in its structure. All the pieces are placed on the table at the beginning of each show (the first 20 minutes or so never actually feature columbo himself). There are times when columbo (first name frank btw ) never appears for > 30 mins, in some of the longer shows.

for my money, its not only the best detective show, but could be the best tv show ever made... even tho some of the later seasons were a bit naff.
I voted Columbo and I agree with you ,Kipp. By the way,''My wife thinks your
terrific''

Re: Classic TV Cops / Detectives

Homicide, Life on the Streets (or something like that) was actually my favorite detective show. But Columbo gets my vote for favorite individual detective character. Dennis Franz is much more realistic, though.

Looks like the action crowd is preferring S+H while the thinkers are going with Columbo. I'm not as into action myself, but for that sort of thing I'd actually pick Magnum before the others.

The "Naked Gun" movies originated from this show, made by the Zucker/Abrahams/Zucker team that created Airplane!
