Was his tone annoying? Yes. But golly, his playing. I mean, he was like nothing else when he came down the pike.

My faves:

Re: Why do people say Randy RHoads had horrible tone?

I always found the studio tone to be a little trebly, the tribute album is brilliant though. His chops were unbelievable.

Randy's studio tone was still better than Dimebag, however. His tone just sounded like a bag of ass

Live tone--OK--Studio tone on Blizzard--iffy at best-

Lots of people (players I know) mention him not having all that great tone-

I saw him and Ozzy shortly before his death-His live tone was good---

BUT--as we all know--tone is a very subjective term-

George Lynch had a lot of ASS tone, but I like him too-

Randy was the first guy to bring that LA guitar sound to the forefront of metal-10 years later, everybody had the same, not so good tone, IMO---

Who cares--He could play his ass off-

Funny cause I always hated his tone sounds over processed and like he recorded thru a cassette player. His playing is great but also seem too planned out .Shocker is most of his licks and riffs were rehashed from his Quiet Riot days.

It was his thing. Personally, I don't think I "hate" a guitarist's tone. But as far as singers, don't get me started on Def Leppard.

Randy was and always will be an incredible guitarist and musician. Personally I like his tone a lot. It was different from anyone else at the time, and I think since.

it was the Altec Lancing Speakers that had the harshness
they were very loud, he was more concerned with cutting through
the mix than tone most likely.
His studio sound was allot better tone wise

But he was a killer guitarist

Would the phrase hive of hornets on serious amphetamines in the middle of orgasms be an appropriate metaphor?

p.s. The troll may be gone but there are about as many people who couldn't (can't) stand Randy Rhodes' or Dimebag Darrell's tones as could (can), no matter what they think of the pair's playing overall. Comes down to individual choice and ears, like everything else in music.

Re: Why do people say Randy RHoads had horrible tone?

On the Randy Rhoads forums there are a few (including me!) that by far prefer his live tone, to his studio tone. Diary Of A Madman is good, but Blizzard Of Ozz has always sounded very sterile IMHO. To be fair, it may be the production of 'Blizzard', rather than the actual sound Randy was making with his gear, but the tone on the album to my ears anyway, has always seemed lifeless and doesn't do him justice (I say that as a die hard Randy Rhoads fan too)

Of the official releases, the tone on The Tribute album and also the recent live recording with The legacy edition of Diary, are the complete opposite! The guitar is vibrant, 'full on' and Randy sounds like he is constantly having to tame the guitar! It is literally alive and full of energy. That's the Randy I think of...

I've heard it before. I can understand why it may not be to some peoples tastes, a lot of gain, a bit fluffy sometimes and very ice-picky others, but I think it's great!
