How Good Are Your Ears? Round 2 – Guess My Gear

__________________

another snippet of a solo from a song recorded in '82 (Ten Years After Round 1's recording)

name of the band, The Take

this is going to be a challenge due to the crappy quality of the (live) cassette recording (for some reason, i prefer low–fi cassette recordings, plus i want to bump the difficulty factor – go figure)

once again, if you know me, guessing the guitar, amp, and effect(s) used may be as easy as falling off a log – but then, maybe not...

due to the quality of the recording, more wiggle room on the answers may be accepted as close–enough

also, i let the song run till the end to compensate for the low–fi and provide extra listening

will let this thread roll 48 hours in order to give folks plenty of time (unless it gets nailed down quickly) before posting/confirming the specifics

*bonus points: guess the bassist's gear

enjoy and good luck!

Re: How Good Are Your Ears? Round 2 – Guess My Gear

I am not the guy to be guessing anything, so I'll leave that to the amazing folks who do know about that type of stuff, but the guitar tone is thinner than a humbucker to me. I would guess single coil or P-90 perhaps. I wouldn't be able to guess the amp or the effect(s). And there's no way I would guess the bassist's gear correctly, so yeah.

Re: How Good Are Your Ears? Round 2 – Guess My Gear

I'm gonna guess:

Guitar: Tele into a Fender combo with chorus tracked live.

Bass: Steinberger, but I have no idea whether it was amped or DIed.

Good stuff, too, Ray. The guitar reminded me a bit of what might happen if Andy Summer and Aldo Nova got drunk and had a little a hanky-panky.

Re: How Good Are Your Ears? Round 2 – Guess My Gear

Can't mistake the rotowound bass strings. Probably a guitar amp.
The guitar is a 1968 Vox teardrop plugged into an LPB1 running through a 1972 bandmaster head. The lower left speak was going bad at the time.

All I know is, I dug the "Yeah" as a lead-in for the bass picking up after the drums.
What is driving me crazy is how you must have been dressed.

Re: How Good Are Your Ears? Round 2 – Guess My Gear

...............Gentlemen ....................
I definitely got the "tele" or Les Paul (p 90 / mini-bucker )
The amp ............... with the chorus effect could be a
Marshall JTM 50 / Fender Bassman.
For the bass............ I hear a Fender Jazz / or Precision.
The amp ................ Ampeg SVT.

.......... definitely an early POLICE type sound and
a tad more PUNK-ish.
Well ..... F'N..... done Ray...................

Re: How Good Are Your Ears? Round 2 – Guess My Gear

Tele, with the pickup switch at mid-position, through a chorus (duh), into a Marshall with greenbacks.

J-Bass, mostly bridge pickup, into an ampeg (??)

This recording is SOOoo unfair!

Re: How Good Are Your Ears? Round 2 – Guess My Gear

Jeeze, really hard to tell and could be anything from a tele to gibson with lower output humbuckers (t tops?), mini humbuckers, p90s, or anything!

I really cannot make a conclusion, but I am taking a shot in the dark at gibson and a random amp, maybe a marshall.

edit: and it does appear to have some chorus on the guitar, which would complicate things further.

Re: How Good Are Your Ears? Round 2 – Guess My Gear

Sounds more like a Strat than a Tele to me.
And I would guess some type of Crate or Roland SS amp (typical '80's)

Re: How Good Are Your Ears? Round 2 – Guess My Gear

amp - twin, maybe a vibrolux? sounds fendery though.
effects - fuzz and a chorus (at different times)
guitar - i'm going with a LP with buckers. (i think the fuzz is throwing people off towards a tele or P90 guitar)

not too shabby though, sounds cool.

i'm in the background yelling back at the singer but it may not be audible enough on some playback systems

for years, during solos i would yell, scream, or try to sing along with my solos ala' Oscar Peterson (only not as talented) – typically the volume of the band and amps would drown me out unless i was near an omnidirectional microphone

no brainer there: during that period, either an all black or all red skin–tight pant and jacket (tailor) made from shiny parachute material plus the ever present Beatle boots – less crazy now?
