There's Always More Than Meets the Eye, Especially in Easter Island

Pretty cool discovery here,

Rock heads of Easter Island have bodies, too

Quote:
For years, the 887 massive sculpted heads of Easter Island have been considered an enigma. The mystery has literally deepened ever since an excavation started in October 2011 revealed the ancient heads that dot the island are actually full-figured statues, buried up to their necks in soil. Photographs on Thinkbox of the excavation reveal unique carvings hidden on the huge underground bodies and have opened up a fresh discussion of the monoliths online. The layered petroglyph writings, carved into the backs of the massive figures, are composed in a design thought to represent the sun and rainbow. Tuna vertebrae found in the soil at the base of the statues hints that sculptors were paid in food as their descendants, the Rapa Nui, have always claimed. (Starving artists today can empathize.)

I'll have to read up on that and think on it, but that's hard to do when your thread title gives me this Google ad:

What if there are boobies like that under there?

You'd think ancient people would have been more concerned with building Best Buy and televisions than some statues in the middle of nowhere.

I agree, wholeheartedly. I think pulling up and auctioning panties from the Titanic is pretty sick, really.

I don't know about "panties", but they have sold bits of coal and shards of glass from the wreck of the Titanic in gift shops and on Ebay.

I always thought it was in pretty bad taste, and that's saying something.

"Personal items of clothing" are for sure. I even read an excellent article on same, with photos, in the New York Times a couple of weeks ago.

Are they actually auctioning panties? Yeah, probably. They were larger then, remember, and called "bloomers" or "underpants". "Panties" are simply the diminutive, current version thereof. Same difference.

Re: There's Always More Than Meets the Eye, Especially in Easter Island

Crap! I made a full-sized Easter-Island-head replica in my backyard years ago. Now I have to go back and add a body?!

I've been a fan of the heads even since Styx came out with "Pieces of Eight".

I'm with Skintaster on this. How the heck did no one ever look before?

Check it out! Man-boobs, a big gut, and showing off a small penis is not just a modern thing you see in Wal-Mart. It's a tradition that goes back hundreds of years!

(warning: Easter-Island sexting content)

After looking a little deeper (pardon the pun), I found this photo, of an excavation that is further along than the one shown in the OP:
