Even the meanest, most ill-tempered dog can be helped with enough time, patience, and love.

Re: holy crap, I found a pit bull in my yard...

Georgie is/was the nastiest dog I've ever owned (he swore at other dogs 5 times his size)! But he was small, so could never cash the checks his mouth would write:

He sounded like a Harbor Seal.

Fine with people, and with any dogs that were close cousins like Chihuahuas, etc. But he'd see a German Shephard and go dog ballistic!

I finally had him trained down to where it was no longer a problem, but if my son walked him he'd revert and undo all the training because he wasn't held accountable.

Sheesh.

I miss him all the same, but he was neurotic!

Definite Napoleanic Complex.

Re: holy crap, I found a pit bull in my yard...

Pit's are much, and unfairly maligned. Unfortunately they get a bad rep because a lot of wanna be thugs get them, and train them to be aggressive. They can be loving, loyal, family pets, and I've had them for years. The best dogs I've ever personally had, actually.

You've gotten some good advice here. I would suggest that you be somewhat cautious with letting kids around this dog - Not because pits are more likely to attack a child than other breeds, but because you don't know the dog well yet.

Checking for the chip, is a great idea, and I also suggest you check for "Missing dog" signs in your neighborhood. I've known people that lost a pit, and then found it miles away... They can cover a lot of ground.

If you can't find it's home, and can't give it one, check around for pit rescue and fostering groups. There are probably a few in your area, and they'll work to place the dog in a good home.

Pits are great dogs that often suffer because particularly stupid and cruel humans. I think it's great you're trying to help this one out.

Teenager mauled in savage dog attack - Local News - News - General - Newcastle Herald

there is a stigma with the breed but also uneducated people who see any stocky big chested thick necked dog as a "pit bull" wether it be an english staffordshire terrier or american or pit bull.

I mean my old neighbour tried to get rid of this little treasure.Look how cute he is jumping up on the table there lickin a guitar i was wet sanding trying to help out

I have seen some dogs I wouldn't even think about getting close too.

But the only "dog" that I've seen in person and consider evil to the bone was a wolf mix. It was fenced up right across my sister's house. You could just tell in it's eyes if there wasn't a fence, it would screw you up. Still gives me the creeps thinking about it.

Phil, any of them show any signs of hip dysplasia? We have an older Shepherd we inherited from our neighbors. Her hips are in very bad shape. We keep her in the house with a soft bed and give her lots of glucosamine. She still gets around but it gets worse all the time. Just wondering if you have had to deal with it?

The problem with pitbulls and the source of their horrible reputation is almost never due to them attacking their owners. It's the neighbor kid walking down the street. It's the guy casually riding his bike nearby. Sure, they are great loyal dogs, but that doesn't mean that loyalty or cute fuzzy wuzziness matters when their jaws are clamped down on an 8 year olds face.

Re: holy crap, I found a pit bull in my yard...

I own several dogs myself, and it's unfortunate that Pits and many other breeds get such a bad rap because of bad breeding, ownership. fear/aggession issues.. While I don't necessarily trust other dogs (because you never really know unless you know them) I don't blame the breed.. and I was attacked when I was little. Some dogs just have bad issues and some owners don't take care of their dogs.

I think it's really great that you are trying to find her home, she looks like a real sweetie. If anything you can always try the local rescues in your area as others have suggested! :-)

And hard statistics. Attacks by breed are pretty well documented, and none of the breeds discussed here so far top the list (go figure).

Sensational news stories by breed - different set of statistics altogether. Lurko, you of all people should not be sucked in by selective reporting. I haz a disappoint.

These dogs are like keeping a loaded .45 on your coffee table. Chances are it won't hurt anyone, but if it does the consequences are horrific. That mean 'ol Chihuahua the pit lovers always cite doesn't have the capacity to kill you. These dogs too, and moreover they've been bred for aggression. Terrible combo.

Besides, everybody knows it's the Yorkies and Wiener dogs you cannot trust--

My wife's aunt had a cocker spaniel that I would have loved to see die a most horrific death--rather, the bitch died of old age--It was a mean piece of shit---I kicked it like a football one day after it tried to bite an entire gaggle of small children--It got clothes and toys, while trying to get faces and hands--

I have known some fantastic pits and rotts--The problem with these two breeds are: Unfortunately, they were bred for being able to destroy other living creatures--even the most docile of the bread has all the tools to be a calculated killer---When they go ape shit, they really go ape shit-

They have taken the place of the German Shepard of the 60's and 70'd--The Doberman of the 70's and 80's and the Rotts of the 80's and 90's---

The Pitbull has become the dog for people with Small Peens--

I know a Pit in Bloomington Indiana that is the coolest, most laid back, gentle dog on the planet--I also has a neighbor that owned one that I had to tell him if his dog was ever in my yard again, for any reason, I would kill it, then kick his ass----This was after it chased my wife and oldest daughter back into our house, while they were out in OUR yard playing-

Like previously stated--Every human should be Leary of every dog encountered, regardless of size or breed, until the dogs actions (not the owner's words) prove to you the dog is not a threat--It is amazing how many people I know that have been bitten by dogs that don't bite-

I am almost 48 years old and I have owned large dogs all my life---my current Lab Bear, is truly the only dog I am 100% certain would never bite anybody---Even my other two labs before him, if defending his home or family, would have ripped your ass off---Not Bear--He's a lover, not a fighter-

Dogs are wolves a few times removed---all wolves can kick your ass at will, if need be---Just remember this-

i agree.
they are sweet dogs until they see other dogs and gets bizerko.
they are banned here as well.
i saw one time an owner tell his pit to kill a stray cat.
it was instant, he bit the neck of that cat and killed it in seconds.
now this dog can be sweet but can also kill you in a sec.

Bullshit, any dog can be dangerous if it is abused, same goes for humans. Breed has nothing to do with it. I have always owned Rotts and have never had a vicious dog.

Will they protect their property, yes that is their job... That doesn't make them vicious.

Don't you just love my blood thirsty dog ?

Good luck with the dog John, she looks like a sweet girl.
