Re: Who is Onehippie?
There's another pearler below that one - Vastapol Tuning or some-such.....
Worth going to his various sites too, and taking in the full glory of the Emperor's New Suit and how wonderful it is, and how everybody else really should "follow suit" if you'll pardon the pun..... I have been playing for fifty years now and never felt my teaching anyone would be appropriate. Someone like Phil, a working and pro muso with a track record as long as yer arm, or even dear old JV with the chops and stuff can carry it off AND pass on loads of useful stuff, those are the guys I look to for learning from. I don't understand the philosophy that suggests if you have had one lesson - you can pass it on as a teacher in your own right. But I AM willing to learn if anyone cares to enlighten me.

I'll say this for him, he is supremely confident in his delusion.Critcism doesn't seem to phase him a bit. Gotta admire that!
![]() He doesn't feel the need at all to play up to recognized standards. Plunking around at home, who cares? But posting his trifles as lessons is ballsy to say the least.

Diplomatic.....
![]() .....well all WAAAAAY over my head, boxes, cages, crates, tea-chests, knapsacks, hold-alls ![]() I am gonna find someone who has recently learned to drive and keeps crashing their car in the car-park at the supermarket, and get them to give me driving lessons. If Phil finds it acceptable, it's fine by me.

Re: Who is Onehippie?
I'm posting from my hotel room in San Francisco. A friend of mine and I drove down for the day. We're going to a professional baseball game this evening. SF Giants v New York Mets. I love the hustle and bustle of the city but thank my lucky stars that I'm not living down here any longer.
After the game we're going to find some good food. Not a difficult thing to accomplish here as the choices are endless. I'll catch you all tomorrow. Oh, and yes, you are quite the diplomat Phil. I'm afraid your words went right over his head though. He's a stubborn one with a good dose of delusional grandeur sprinkled on top. |

Re: Who is Onehippie?
Phil was SOOOOO restrained!
And really, John as well!! (helluva surprise).I have a similar problem with fellow art insructors. It's as if a bunch of historians and critics decided to pick up a paint brush. Theoretically knowledgeable, but produce utter crap and have no knowledge of HOW TO ACTUALLY RENDER A PAINTING! And the small percentage that know how to paint or create, don't know how to IMPART THAT KNOWLEDGE TO OTHERS. Artists have a lot invested in the idea of 'THE GIFT'. It makes them special, better in some ways than others, since 'THE GIFT' cannot be acquired. However, I have seen DESIRE out pace the gift over and over as a teacher. Can't beat hard work and dedication. I don't know if this fellow has either. ![]() I do understand Nik's feelings however, as I know a little of the back story. Shows how arrogant the guy really is.

Well, I suppose it's because I never like attacking unless I really have to Clover. I will say my piece and try to put it across profesionally if at all possible and don't usually get involved with threads like that for the simple reason, that's about the only subject I get serious about. The only time I have waded in all guns blazing on someone was with Scott Grove who basically came in and told everyone not to go to any guitar teacher other than him because they were all crap rip off merchants and didn't know what they were talking about.. .. Then I did let him have it big time and he backed down. This guy may well be deluded, but he seems quite harmless and at least he's not down right rude an offensive ( Well not yet anyway). ![]() Changing the subject somewhat, hope you enjoy your baseball game tonight. You are like me. After a day in the city I yearn for the leafy lanes and rolling green hills of the shire.. Have a good one and don't eat too many hot dogs. ![]() A few like Scott Grove are actually extremely hostile verging on insane and so delusional it's not true, but I find guys like this are desperatley trying to find their six minutes of fame and simply need reminding. As I said to Clover, I don't like attacking people unless I have to and in this case, I think I hopefully put my point across without going too over the top or sounding conceited. I do see your point of view however and agree about the driving lessons..

As I said before, wherever you go you bump into 'Experts'. Whatever you say, or do. there will always be that type of person who will emerge who has either done it before. Could do it better, or knows someone who can.. ![]() You want to see the clowns that try and latch onto my daughter with their expert advice.. ![]() Fortunately dad has taught her fairly well and she deals with them effectively. Whatever you say to these people will bounce of them like water of a ducks back, simply because they 'know the answers', or at least delude themselves into thinking they do. It's like a f*cking minefield trying to avoid them. Calling them names only bolsters their belief that you are either jealous or don't know what you are talking about. One only has to read a Scott Groves thread to see this. The only way to effectively deal with them is point out where they are wrong by means of knowledge of the subject greater than theirs. It's like using a sledgehammer.. Bang! One hit..Good night. They can't argue with this and if they do know they will only make themselves look even more foolish trying to squirm their way out. This is one of the reasons I don't tend to enter into these type of threads, because I know at some point or another I wont be able to bite my tongue any longer and dont want to appear as some sort of big head know it all myself.. On most topics I simply wade in and often make myself look an idiot and don't mind people pointing out I have done so. But I do take music seriously and although I say it myself do know far more than guys like him simply by the mere fact I have far more experience in making a living at it from both gigging and teaching. I dont do it often but when I do... ![]() There was once this kid I gave lessons to and his Father who I knew worked in a carpet factory. One day this kid comes in to a lesson with a CD and tells me to listen to it as a guy at his dads work gave it to his dad to give me as he wanted to hear what I had to say about it. OK.. I put it on... Widdle widdle widdle. Not in the slightest melodic in any way or form and way over the top in effects. I was going to say " Tell him I enjoyed listening to it " until the kid said. My dad asked him if he had heard of you and the guy said. " Yeah I have, he's crap isn't he and nowhere in my leaugue" ![]() "Do you have a message for him regarding the CD " the kid said laughing.. "Yeah" I replied, "tell your dad to ask him if he has any good second hand carpets for sale" ![]() Boy, that one hit home.. Evidently the guy was fuming according to the kids dad , as everyone at the company who heard it burst out laughing at him. Twat! I later heard he was a nasty piece of work who put everyone down who played the guitar.. None of the pros I know had ever heard of him and to this day, he is still making carpets. Life is too short to worry about these people. We all know them dont we?.. ![]() Unfortunately wherever you go and no matter what you think you know there is always someone who'll be your Hucklberry waiting .. Sometimes it's better to keep your mouth shut and appear stupid than to open it and remove all doubt..

Re: Who is Onehippie?
![]() A bit like the time I walked into a guitar shop and asked a salesman if I could have a couple of .028 strings or something like that. He looked at me whilst noodling on a Strat and said " No we only have .026. I politely said "Ok thanks and headed for the door.. Mistake number one..He says in a loud voice with a shop full of people.. " Pity Sir, I have been playing for twelve years and I can't tell the difference in gauge, so why dont you take the 0.26's". Ok.. I let it go and happened to see an old fiesta red lawsuit Tokai hanging on the wall. I asked I could try it and he handed it over saying "please don't scratch it with your buttons".I declined using an amp and went quitely into a corner just to get the feel of it unplugged. Then big mistake number two and his final one. In front of everybody he shouts over " If you knew anything about guitars Sir you would realise that you cant bend strings on a Tokai like you can on this Strat". The manager of the shop walked in just as he said that who knew me and was trying to give him signals to shut up. The place went quiet and I grabbed his lead, plugged in the Tokai and started to play Jingle bells out of time and out of tune.. A smirk broke out on his face, which unfortunately for him was short lived. I suddenly broke into a fast country rock Albert Lee type thing putting in pedal steel bends all over the place.. After a few seconds I stopped, handed him the guitar and said " Wow, you can certainly learn quickly on one of these".. The whole place fell about laughing and I said " Listen son. you may have been playing for twelve years and cant tell the difference between .028 and .026 gauge strings , but I have been playing for 45 years and can, so next time anyone asks you that question just reply with a simple yes or no". He went ashen nearly burst into tears and ran out the back of the shop. Twat..

Re: Who is Onehippie?
Of course the classic case of meeting the wrong Huckleberry was this guy I used to know back in London .
We have all met the type. Whatever you have done he's done better. In other words a pompous ass. He was once sitting in a park in Oxford when an old disheveled looking guy with his hair all over the place came shuffling along, sat down on a nearbye bench and fed the birds with crusts from his sandwich. The guy I knew looks at him as though he was a tramp and proceeds to give him a lecture on how he should do something with his life. He then goes on to tell the old guy to look around him and take in the wonders of nature and the universe and asks him if was aware he lived on a small blue planet orbiting the sun in a vast galaxy. The old guy just nodded and smiled and kept on feeding the birds. The guy I knew then asks the old man.. " So what actually do you do with your days then ?" The old man smiled turned to him and said in a very cultured voice " I teach astro phyisics at Oxford univeristy" ![]() ![]() ...![]() Game set and match. I have never let the silly bastard forget that one.

Re: Who is Onehippie?
I have returned from San Francisco. This morning I was walking around the city in shorts and a Pink Floyd t-shirt, freezing my ass off due to a strong, damp wind from the sea. I went from 59 degrees F to 99 degrees F when I stepped out of my car at home.
Whoever invented airconditioning should be deemed a saint. ![]() Other than the home team losing the game, it was quite entertaining. A huge sell-out crowd at AT&T Park enthusiastically cheered their team on. I steered clear of the hot dogs, but I did order a sheboygan brat smothered with grilled onions. We wound up staying up until well past 2 in the morning eating, drinking and listening to a guitar player gig at an establishment that was having an open mic night. The axe slinger was a chicken picker and he was quite good. The most satisfying part of the trip for me was to be able to see, hear, feel and taste the ocean. There is nothing like it and I shall always be drawn to it. That being said, it's nice to be home and away from the concrete jungle and all of the craziness that comes with it. |
