Jeesh...

I have offered him a dogfight in Sturmovik on many an occasion but he changes the subject every time.

Yes, as in.. 'Technically' one plane may have been faster than the other... what of it? One Panther may have been stonger than one Sherman, in the end it made no difference... ze Germans lost.

So back to when I posted the Hawkers, you replied ...don't bother the ME is faster... yeah, maybe.. what of it? Plenty of battles were lost by the side with the fancier toys. Means fekk all!

Re: Who is Onehippie?

The ME262 never eally got under way, as it really came in too late into the war, which was lucky for the allies at the time.
It was good at diving straffing runs through bomber formations with it's four deadly 30 mm cannon, but P51 pilots soon learned tactics to out manouver it, should it try to turn into a dogfight.
Also, it wasn't very good at low speeds and needed a concrete runway and some were hit while trying to land or take off.

Yes they had their limitations, but the potential of the technology was frightening, given the ultimate goal!

Re: Who is Onehippie?

Of course, also being developed at the same time as the 262 was Frank Whittle's Gloucester Meteor which also saw active service shooting down around 13 V1 doodlebugs.
The Brits wouldn't allow any to fly over Germany in case the Germans or Russians got their hands on a downed one.
It would have been interesting to have seen what would have happened had the war lasted longer and the 262 had got more operational. The Brits would have definitely sent out Meteors to tangle with them.
Blimey I can remember seeing Meteors as a Kid..

The RAF also collaberated with the US air force practising attacks on bombers using real B29's and Meteors.

Another early jet just after the Meteor was the The de Havilland DH.100 Vampire.
I remember seeing these flying for the Swiss airforce in the 1950's as a kid when visiting my relations. They would come thundering through the valley , below my Uncles chalet.

Here's me and my Grandson in the cockpit of a Sea Venom variant at Yeovilton air museum..

So I accept onehippie's friends request and the very next day my computer died. I'm talking stone cold dead. Coincidence?

It's all good, though. The wife can't argue with me buying a new one since she is unable to shop for anything online at this point.
