Hippie and I saw Billy Joel. Angry Young man thundered. Hippie said"Once I was angry, now I am SANE!"

I never forgot that. People spraypainted cars. We walkled past them. Fumes in the air. Fumes in our minds.

You and onehippie should have been around in the golden age of music like us old farts .. You don't know what you missed...There will never be another 1960's...
You can even see my missus in her hat at 0:37...

All the old farts of today are the people you can see in this vid..
We set the revolution going in the first place... It was us who were riding shotgun in the sky...

I didn't always have grey hair you whippersnappers... Been there done that forty years ago...

Many dry times indeed Hippster..
Back then it was all new and raw.. It was post war and the youth instead of only speaking when spoken too rebelled and cast of the shackles of the drab grey 50's.

None of this X factor diva wailing crap with autotune..Pure raw rock n' roll from the heart..

I truly sympathize with my students. They are drowning in media, can see every performance and find every song. See every artist, painting, movie, television program. But how do you produce something original after all that?
I think you sometimes are at an advantage when creating in a vacuum. Fewer influences. More chance of serendipitous accidents!

Ok we may appear slighty cynical sometimes, but that comes with age and effects everyone, even though the younger ones cant sometimes comprehend that notion and will often dimiss it as simply being an old fart.
We were all young once believe it or not and you guys will be the old farts of tomorrow.
The road is long my friend. We are just a bit further along it then some of you.
As usual I find it easier express myself in musical terms.

Ahhh.. The days when lyrics had some meangfulness to them...

So just how old are you, you old bugger?

We can still rock with the best of them...

I was in my 50's when I did this with a county orchestra..You should have seen the string sections faces when I let rip.. Priceless
I knew many of the classical players and the thought of improvising over a 7/4 sequence scared the crap out of them..I was like Brere Rabbit in a briar patch.. They also gave me a solo over the 4/4 section towards the end too.

Jesus ..that was so much fun. Better than any rush I've had with most blues bands..The power of the strings, brass and tympany behind you is awesome..Trombones cracking away in the depths behind your head.
More often than not, I love being part of the whole thing which envelopes you, rather than the usual cliched ' step up front' 48 bar wailing guitar solo thing which can get a bit boring at times..

Fantastic performance Phil! YOU are a professional!

And flawless orchestra as well. The conductor must be very competent. Bravo!

I on the other hand, rock only in my studio. I eschewed a musical career for the visual arts. I just couldn't hack both. I was a bit soured on that by my brother and father anyway. That's another story.

I'm 57. I'm guessing you're a bit older, about my brother's age.
I have yearned to perform but create in my studio and work away scoring my animations.
I was in my teens in the '60s but hung out with the older crowd.
Turned on early! (14)
You should be VERY proud of your career. I'm jealous old man!

Obviously that vid is not me actually playing or the same orchestra, but the same song. Never the less it was a large orchestra and great fun.
Sounds great fun doing what you are doing in your studio and in fact probably more rewarding than most gigs. At least you are doing your own stuff..
57 eh?....not far behind me then...

I am proud and frankly sometimes amazed I have managed to survive for so long playing guitar. Mind you in todays climate I may well think twice about doing it as a profession if I were say 20. It's definitely not the same with regard work as it used to be.

At the time that was taken I think I was working with this guy.
One day I'll tell you a real funny story about doing this particular number on stage with him..
Jim had a fantastic voice, but Oh dear he did like the demon drink..Too much in fact.. If anything could have gone wrong on that particular night ..It went wrong..

Quite right Clove'. I always like to differeniate between 'Hippie' and 'Freak'. . I hung out with hippies, communal farms, but felt more hardcore and more cynical. But maybe that's just me. It's nuance. In fact my hippie nickname was 'Freaky Frank'.
Uh,.. 'Blank Frank' came later!

I admire anyone who can make a career in the arts, music especially. Home and family responsibilities often clash with career. My brother, a classical musician has been married, er, 5 Times?
Hard to keep track!
Gigging from city to city has hazards of all sorts.

The sheer number of (new) guitarists vying for gigs is daunting. Live music waxes and wanes in popularity and even the recording industry is losing ground.
That alone should be a wake up call to the industry. Young people can find all kinds of obscure older performances that make manufactured celebrities seem pale in comparison.
I think young musician's are less at the mercy of that system since one can have a worldwide audience fairly quckly.
Making it pay is another thing.

Not necessarily so. The key to safety was keeping in with:
1. The Bouncers; and
2. The Management
of the venues you played.
The bouncers would always look after the bands they were 'in' with, as they saw them as employees of the Management like themselves.

Don't be fooled by the appearance of these two:

The guy on the left was a martial arts black belt. The guy on the right was as hard as nails. Both very nice people, but you did NOT cross them. They would have you helpless on the floor, or unconscious, in a couple of seconds.

There are always crowds at Stonehenge. Doesn't mean they're all f*ckin' Druids...

Just as long as the guitar plays,
It'll steal your heart away,
Steal your heart away...

D Major is a key, not a pitch.

Don't be fooled by the appearance of these two:

The guy on the left was a martial arts black belt. The guy on the right was as hard as nails. Both very nice people, but you did NOT cross them. They would have you helpless on the floor, or unconscious, in a couple of seconds.
I was just indulging in a little light banter John.
I know the score with the bouncers. I always talked to them, offered them smokes & generally treated them with respect. If things go tits up I want them on my side. It's a long night for them as well.

I have known & still know people working the doors & floors of Glasgow venues. Not people to be trifled with at the best of times.
