Come on. You know you know a southerner or 2 who is still sore over the civil war and harbors resentment or hate towards us yankee folk. Ive personally found myself in a couple of situations where this was the case. Shockingly, I have yet………..ANOTHER QUESTION.

Actually, no I don't.

Ive never had a problem with southerners, and have enjoyed my travels there. Ive seen comments sometimes that seem resentful, but I never really understood that mentality either

I've heard it said that WWI was the first industrialized war, but the North, during the civil war was able to muster a lot of industrial might and move men and material to the battle.

Yeah, I think most people are probably over it. The same thing will happen when all the WWII vets are long gone... it won't carry the same emotional weight.

I've always wonder why Northerners keep bringing it up. None of it was ever my idea, although it's still used as grounds for declaring the entire South morally bankrupt. It's fairly similar to Godwin's Law in some respects. It's just silly and stupid to bring up, as if anyone in today's day and age has any claim to the events or merits associated with the war.

Bruce Catton makes a strong case that that war was as much a war between two eras, agrarian and industrial, as it was between two regions, and I agree with him.

Both directly and indirectly, the two regions of the country back then were headed in different directions, and a split was bound to happen, I think.

No shit. It's interesting how often such declarations are used by the claimant to assert his own superiority, at least here in California. The implicit message is often, "Well, I can't be racist, because I'm not from the South."

I bring it up because the malfunction between the 2 cultures intrigues me. The Northerner bias has been clear on an occasion or 2 during my mostly pleasant visits down south, and has also been acknowledged by another member here in this thread. I dont want to pretend it doesn't exist, I want to get to the bottom of my question, WHY does it exist?

It is pretty damn petty. I guess some people think of it as pissing on their "history" (even though most idiots that get riled about stuff like that can't trace their family past their grandparents). I look at it as history.. It's in the past. It was a BAD deal all around, but I believe that the world (at least as we Americans know it) wouldn't be what it is today if the outcome had been the opposite. Some dude from up there killed a great great uncle of mine 150 years ago. Sucks that it happened, but to harbor any bad feelings is pointless and ignorant. Personally, i'd rather take energy like that and spend it on making my family and my life better, and hopefully that will spread out to other folks, than stew about something that I couldn't change if I wanted too.

I believe that the North VS South "drama" is still played out because of the way everything was "handled" in the first place. We were taught that the Civil War was fought soley on the principal of slavery and it flat out wasn't. Lots of other countries had abolished slavery without killing 1/2 of it's male population. "The RUB" was Shermans burning, raping, and cold blooded murder of thousands of innocent people and their property, AND the piss poor "reconstuction" under Grant. Given that animosity that spilled over to the late 1800's and early 1900's it's not a REALLY big "shocker" why some trailer trash would thing if the boys in gray would have won things would be better.

I admit I got caught up in that crap too.. until I started reading a few books. There were a SH!TLOAD of dirtbags on BOTH sides trying to ca$h in and cover their @sses. I firmly believe that if we could dig those fookers up (on both sides) and show them what we've "acheived", they'd beg us to thow'em back in the hole.

Haven't been past Jackson, Mississippi since. I've been all over the country, but spring/early summer and fall/early winter.. There's NO other place I'd rather be than down here brutha. Summer FLAT OUT SUCKS!!! Friggin mid July/August when it's 100 d@mn degrees with 98% humidity.. You walk out of the house at 7 in the morning and sweat runs off your b@lls, down your pants leg and into your socks. Around noon, you have to tkae a knife, cut some air out, put in your mouth, chew and swallow so you can breathe.... I tell you waht.. You drive out of Memphis (hotter than 2 rats f@xin in a wool sock), head down 55, take the 69 to Tunica/Robinsonville and come off the levee.. it feel like it's 20 degrees hotter by the time you get to hwy 61. You get on a riverboat.. we used to have 3 hr Friday and Saturday night cruises.. and you had better bring a long sleeve shirt.
Winter.. We get snow flurries and there's MAYHEM in the streets.. They close schools, shut down the busses and there's going to be at least 3 pile ups on the loop.

Good ole days my ASS.. BUT all the bad stuff finds it's way around. I personally think we've regressed back to the late 1800's and early 1900's in what little industry we have left. I've got a 15 yr old son and my fiancee has a 14 yr old girl that are trying to figure out what field to get into after high school and get a diploma in and it's pretty dismal right now.

I see your sarcasm.. It's not funny. MY good ole days were from 1989 till 1994.

Its pretty interesting though, when I think about it, anybody who I may have had a connection with to the civil war has probably been dead for at least 50 years I guess. I mean, the children of children from the civil war were probably dead by then.

Apparently my great grandpa was enlisted to world war 1, and even I didn't know about that, and that was a long time after the civil war (of course, he did die an early death after the war, so my grandpa never knew him...).

I guess the point is that the civil war is long gone, old history, and even if I did have any familial connection to it (I am pretty sure I did somewhere), I have no clue about it and don't hold it against anyone.

Now that you guys mention it, it will be interesting to see what the world is like when all the ww2 vets are gone...
