Re: North Vs South
that's U mad bro. You like to start threads making fun of others, don't you? Keep it up, I'm sure the more people who read them the bigger your reputation gets. I know you're an ass, and I know you could give a shit what someone else thinks of you. What I don't know is why the mods tolerate you.

Re: North Vs South
I love Southerners!
Especially when I'm in their neck of the woods (usually NC or GA) and they ask me where I'm from. "New Jersey" They take 2 steps back... I LOVE IT!!!!

"How can you stand to live in a state with so many rednecks?" or: "You don't seem like you're from the South, most of those people are awful." Some version of one of those. They generally meant well. trying to "compliment" me for not meeting their negative southern stereotypes, but that's not really a compliment is it? And it just betrays a strong regional bias on their part... And a lot of ignorance too. Yes, some people in the South fit those stereotypes, and some are a bit sensitive to criticism from Northerners, but there are reasons for that kind of attitude. Now me? I think all of that weird regional stuff is LAME, and I try to avoid stereotyping people based on where they live, even if they meet those stereotypes from time to time. Generalizing about enormous populations of people is never accurate. so both "sides" feed this. Some Southerners are prickly about being criticized, and some people from other regions can be offensive at times... Perhaps by accident. And I got to come to Joey's defense. He's one of the good guys on this forum, and I think his motives for these kinds of threads are mostly about gaining a broader perspective, and not just stirring shit.

Re: North Vs South
Also... I was thinking about this at work... But some people (Not necessarily Northerners) DO seem to paint the American South as being "Less civilized" and maybe even "More dangerous" than I think is fair.
I think a lot of it is rooted in long running cultural biases based on the South's past as a rural society vs the more "civilized" urban centers of the North East. Those biases are still alive, but for what reasons? I can find backwards people ANYWHERE in this country, and I just don't see why those stereotypes still exist. Consider this... There are entire movie genres that rely on "Evil Southerners" as villains. Watch "Deliverance" and try to mentally substitute the scary "hillbillies" with any other racial or cultural stereotype. think that would go over very well? But in that movie, Southerners are portrayed like subhuman racists. They even throw in a retarded kid... Perhaps suggesting what? Inbreeding or something? And then there are other films like "Southern Comfort" or even "The Texas Chainsaw Massacre" and many of it's descendants. Now I love "TTCM", and it was made by a Texan, but it still relies on scary rednecks to spook people. Oddly, the real cases that spawn these types of horror movies all seem to happen in places like Wisconsin (Ed Gein) or Ohio (Jeffery Dahmer), but still film makers seem to think that southern rednecks make scary ass cannibal movie villains for some reason.

Re: North Vs South
I'm not so sure they classify the South as "scarier", myself. I've met an awful lot of New Yorkers, Bostonians, and Angelenos who take a perverse pride in how dangerous their rough parts of town are.

Re: North Vs South
Well, when you look at culture, the South has it all over the north (and I'm a Yankee by birth). Music and food, almost ALL the good stuff comes from the south. Or south of the border.
Sadly, the highest out-of-wedlock birth rates, the highest illiteracy rates and the highest welfare rates are mostly in the south, too. |

Yeah, I want to invite all my southern fried friends up this way, take them out to eat and show them how fast diners are supposed to be served in this century.

Re: North Vs South
The north has good food, don't get me wrong. I love a lot of the food up here.
But if you're going to have a BBQ, a picnic, any kind of outdoors party with beer and music? Forget about it. The South crushes!!! Best food, awesome music, shitty beer, and generally attractive women who know how to put a hurting on ya The good kind a hurtin' |

Re: North Vs South
I ate a lot of incredibly delicious food during the seven weeks I was down south. I also learned a thing or two about patience, ffs. In one place, I waited just under one hour for my breakfast. The food was to die for, but holy sh*t I could have passed away just waiting.
