Banjos
Who's got a banjo? Who plays one? Does anybody else ever have a hankering to learn? What's a good starter banjo? Enquiring minds want to know.

Re: Banjos
I have a couple of banjos.
I picked up and old Ozark one in a junk shop 20 years ago and learned to pick out a few tunes on it. The wife bought me a nice Fender FB 58 for my birthday a few years back. It mainly sits in its case but does come out from time to time. The Fender FB series are pretty good and go from entry level right up to deluxe. |

Re: Banjos
I have a five string. I love them, although the playing technique is very different to a guitar. ....Don't let Vasco see this though or you will be in for some stick.

Re: Banjos
About 14 years ago I figured it was time to hang up my giggin' shoes and act my age. I began to feel guilty that my beloved 78 ES-335TD had spent nearly ten years in the closet and someone should be playing it. I had an idea that I should start picking acoustic and learning Bluegrass to just pick around town with friends.
One day I found myself trading in my 335 for a vintage Gibson banjo. Years ago I had a banjo for a few days and surprised myself how fast I could play stuff on it. So I thought I should pursue that and getting a vintage banjo would be worthwhile for resale, if I lost interest. Its a 67 Gibson Mastertone RB-250. It has the fiddle style headstock and the bow-tie inlays. ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() Now fast forward ten years and I have a stable full of Les Pauls, gigging about every weekend and the ole Banjo is sleeping in the closet. |

Re: Banjos
I've got a Chicago brand banjo that I picked up cheap several years ago. It's a lot of fun to play, but I'm no banjo player.
Those Deering starter banjos are excellent.

Re: Banjos
I could never play a banjo, no pick guard.
Years ago, I picked up my friend's banjo, thinking I'd have game 'cuase of playing the guitar. I thought wrong.
