The fastest game on earth ???

Hi, just thought id share with you our national game and see what you think of it, Hurling's starting to gain alot of interest and support in the states now and id like to see it go global some day,it really is a fast paced game and a huge test of skill and most definitely bravery ! In Ireland we call it the fastest game on earth but you decide yourselves what you think of it, Have a look

Re: The fastest game on earth ???

When I was a kid there was this dude, Eddie O'Brien, down the street from my Grandparents in New York and he was some kind of Hurling Champion from Ireland in the 60's or 70's or something. Looks rough, like lacrosse without the pads and less gay.

Re: The fastest game on earth ???

Hockey (ice hockey to you) is the fastest game on earth. Professional hockey players routinely reach speeds of over 20mph on the ice and shots generally travel 80-90mph. When the guys playing hurling are moving at that speed, then we can talk.

Re: The fastest game on earth ???

Many of us find watching "fast" games quite boring, akshully, especially on television. And games that don't sell on television don't sell.

True its not a professional sport and probably never will be, its more to do with the 3000 years plus of the games history that keeps guys who work ordinary 9-5 jobs dedicated enough to go training after work and play the games, sorry forgot to mention women also .

I know what you are suggesting but games with sticks and projectiles date from ancient Egypt and there is no indication that hockey evolved from hurling. The current game, although developed in Canada, traces its origins to a game played in the Low Countries back in the Middle Ages.

Jai Alai, golf, and badminton have all laid claim to the "fastest" sport title based upon measured speed of the projectiles involved. I'm pretty sure that F1, et al, have them beat.

You could look it up.

I've never heard of hurling - well, except, never mind.

Well i dont play Hurling anymore because basically i wasnt really any good Love to watch it though, American Football, have never played it so can only comment on what ive seen on tv, my ONLY complaint is its too slow with stoppages, if that game was left to flow more freely it would be truly awesome but its what your brought up with that your going to enjoy and defend and thats cool.

Re: The fastest game on earth ???

What is meant by the title "Fastest game on earth" is in relation to a game, played with a ball or even something thats related to a ball, between two opposing teams , the speed at which the ball moves up and down and across the pitch between individual players as in passing the ball between each other with the intention of ultimately going for a goal/point, not the mph of the ball, more the pace of the game, the score tally in hurling is usually huge in comparison to other games, as for the name Hurling, the stick is called a Hurl or as i call it a Hurley, its played using a ball like object called a sliotar, pronounced slit-her, thats an Irish word so youl have to forgive me my Irish is pretty basic to say the least.

But then it would be called Rugby and the fat boys would have to be replaced. Plus American TV wouldn't want to broadcast it as the viewers wouldn't be able to hit the fridge every five minutes for a snack.

My local always screens the finals. Never managed to get into it though.

Your myopic view of the vast continent of North America renders your opinion invalid.

True. I guess I should have said something along the lines of human propulsion or something like that.

A stick is a tool, not a machine.

For sports played with machines, let's get back to Roller Derby, shall we?

Lever was acceptable to Archimedes, I think it is close enough
But it is hard to go wrong with roller derby.
