Re: Two more American troops dead...

It is sad news, there are soldiers from many nations in Afghanistan, and they are all suffering, I believe there is a plan to get out at some point and the whole idea of being there in the first place, I presume, was to depose the Taliban and stop the place from being used as a terrorist training camp, or was it retribution for 9/11? Not really sure anymore!

On 7 October 2001, Bush announced the first phase of the global war on terrorism, Operation Enduring Freedom. He dictated the theater strategic objectives when he ordered General Tommy Franks, Combatant Commander of Central Command to disrupt al Qaeda’s use of Afghanistan as a base of operations and to attack the Taliban military capability. In terms of campaign design, a discussion concerning the relationship of enabling and terminal campaigns helps understanding how Operation Enduring Freedom supports the global war on terrorism.

PDF link: http://www.google.com/url?sa=t&rct=j...DxMd8gQLFjZ8_w
An "enabling campaign" is a campaign which envisions the creation of conditions under which a terminal campaign may be successfully conducted. I believe that much confusion is caused by not understanding what role the war in Afghanistan plays. It isn't a terminal campaign.

Given that fact, and given the mission Gen Franks was assigned, and given that the Karzai government has had a few years now to steady its gait, I think it's fair to say we've enabled the opening of the terminal campaign in that country. To my mind, that terminal campaign, of assuring Afghanistan's long-term stability, can only be done by Afghanis. That's why I said earlier in the thread that this mission is obsolete. AQ/Afghanistan was disabled by 2002, and while there are still plenty of Taliban and sympathizers, their power is largely in the frontier with Pakistan and not subject to any application of military power anyway.

With an attitude like yours, I am surprised you are still alive. My family history indicates I should live to at least 90 and most likely outlive you.
