Why do so many people hate California?

Well, apparently, a lot of things. In a poll released Tuesday by the Public Policy Polling, California was the least popular state in the United States. Only 27 percent of Americans hold a favorable view of the Golden State compared to the 44 percent who view it unfavorably.

“There’s this arrogance about Californians,” said Patrick Dorinson, a radio host in California who refers to himself as the Cowboy Libertarian.

“Californians still think it’s this great star. It’s a tarnished star at this point.”

The gap of 17 points puts California far behind Illinois (19 favorable, 29 not) and New Jersey (25 favorable, 32 not) as the least liked state in America.

“I’m actually quite surprised California fared so poorly,” said Albert M. Camarillo, a professor of history at Stanford University. “I think the national public knows of our difficult budget situation, our higher than average unemployment rate, the still very expensive housing market.”
The “Left Coast” is distinct in another way – more people have an opinion about California than any other state – only 28 percent of respondents couldn’t decide whether they liked the state or not.

“No one knows anything about Delaware. No one has a clue about Wyoming – but everyone knows California,” said Dowell Myers, a professor of policy planning and demography at the University of Southern California. “Its visibility is really high.”

There’s some good news for California — at least if you’re a female Democrat. Women were less likely than men to rate California as unfavorable, and there was a massive partisan gap. Democrats love California; Republicans can’t stand it. The opposite is true of Texas.
“I’m sure that for a lot of purple America the extra red Texas and blue California may seem a little far out there,” said Roger Salazar, a political consultant in California.

But whatever the reason, most Californians took the news that their state was the last popular in stride.

“They’re just jealous,” Salazar said.

I think the hatred has a lot to do with the cancers that come out of California:

Pelosi
Boxer
Feinstein
Lee
Waxman
Waters

and then all those ridiculous laws in the state restricting farmers, firearms, LAWN MOWER ENGINES, the 9th Circus...

but the weather is nice.

California= beautiful natural life, but many stupid people (with emphasis on stupid politicians)

I rather admire most of the politicians from California, except Reagan. I also support higher tax rate for individuals/corps with annual incomes exceeding $500K, more government funding of science and education, and am against privatization of government services. Oh yeah, we should reduce the power of lobbyists and regulate political campaign spending and advertisements.

I also believe that we should execute a corporation in Texas, just to prove that corporations are really people. Last, Robert Reich is my hero, and I have a minor man-crush on him.

Since when are other states responsible for California's debt? Maybe that's how it is in Canadian provinces, but that's not how it works here in the states.

The only thing California has going for it are agriculture and Silicon Valley. If they seceded (please oh please oh please), Silicon Valley would keep moving to Texas, and Nevada would shut off the water.

Mostly I am just jealous of people who get to live in California, or any coastal city really.

Edit: I guess the word I was looking for, was "envious" instead of "jealous". I just want warm weather, and a nice beach, and a golf course or 2, um and a place to ride my bicycle. Not much.

I joked with my friend alot before he moved to LA- he seemed to love it the last time I talked to him.

I am pretty sure California is bigger than the UK (or of similar size), so of course there is alot of variation in people/ environments

I actually think California is great, once you're out of the cities. I've driven through it a few times. Nor Cal, like up near Weed and Redding, is awesome.

What about the other part of the state the isn't near the coast? Yeah you can see the bay and San Francisco from all around the Bay Area, but it still isn't exactly a beach or exactly coastal (can't see the pacific).

Oh? How many federal employee's and departments do you have in California? Your movie industry is being subsidized by other state tax dollars. What about the military? This stuff all leaves your state if you leave.
