Would have posted earlier but I had to take advantage of the beautiful weather and go for an evening bike ride.

True, overcroweded and overpriced. I was looking at google earth sattelite pictures from 20 years ago and it is surprising how many places that were once empty are now built up. Home prices (along with many other things) are insane.

Hmm, never considered myself a coastal dweller before.

And 15 minutes to hayward sounded a bit overly exaggerated, bt looking at google earth, it looks like if I took the san mateo bridge it might be pretty quick, but 15 minutes is still a little quick...

Honestly, California is just one of those states that has a strong identity - It's the home of movies in the US, and is therefore one of maybe two or three states regularly featured in film and television.

I've spent a lot of time in various Californian cities, and I love the state. It's beautiful, and the majority of the people I've met outside of Hollywood and San Francisco are pretty much just like people everywhere else I've been. I think that Los Angeles and San Francisco get bagged on a lot because of the stereotypes about the people living there - Stereotypes that aren't entirely fair.

I've met people from those places that "fit" the stereotypes pretty well, but many did not. I have had pretty interesting times both places... I've seen the seedy side of Hollywood first hand... *Ahem*.

Anyway, I think tat MOST of the Californians that I've met who seem to look down on the rest of the US are pretty silly folks, and that relatively small minority are probably recent transplants, and not natives. I think that same thing apples to other hip places like New York City, and Austin - It's always the non natives that seem to have an elitist attitude about the place they live in.

Anyway, California is awesome, and I wouldn't mind living in a lot of places there... Probably not LA or San Franciso... Hell, I couldn't afford to live in SF.

And to the guy bagging on Texas (I'm hoping that was a joke). You really should research this place a bit more. The stereotypes don't fit more often than they do. Just saying...
Hah, I know my friend moved to Illinois and sounds like there are some stereotypes people have.

And for the part about non locals, I realised over the past few years that many people that live here had no family anywhere near california in the 1980s, but my family goes back here to way before then. I am wondering what the population here will eventually look like, since my family has alot of friends that lived here forever and moved up to the mountains, but there are alot of new people here.

Gas was $.75 a gallon and leaded, My Impala was equipped with the largest available stock powerplant offered in the year of my birth, radar technology wasn't widespread in law enforcement and the San Mateo bridge was a balls out straightaway with no traffic before my odd houred shift.

I'll concede to 17 minutes 19 with one of the two traffic lights in my path red. See! I can be reasonable...

Oh... and for the record, I got no problem with no other peoples wherever they may be. I don't want to move to wherever ya'll live, but we're cool...

Yes there is. How about a few more fed programs like a percentage of public education, farm subsidies, and disaster relief just to name a few more. The way California is operated they would have about as much chance of making it as Quebec here in Canada.
I guess you didn't bother to read the study but still felt inclined to post it anyway. Good job.

From the opening sentence:

Quote:
claims that tax subsidies for film and TV productions — which nearly every state has adopted in recent years —
Like I stated earlier; there is no Federal Film subsidy.

As far as real subsidies, sure the system would need some tweaking, but California was here long before any Fed subsidy, and it could be here long after.

As an Arizona resident who lives in the desert west of Phoenix, the majority of the plates I see on I-10 are CA.
These people have stumbled, dazed and bewildered, through a vast, open desert.
There were no palm trees, street bums, Starbucks, sidewalks - not even street lights for a couple hundred miles.
No beaches, no skaters with running dogs on a leash, no billboards, no smog.
It seems that a road extending for miles through natural terrain absolutely destroys their meager driving skills.

It's actually pretty amusing to see a BMW or Mercedes with CA plates at the few area gas stops.
Among the locals who pass through, you'll see tha California crowd try to mingle.
(Easy to spot with the peroxide hair, silicone boobs, collagen lips, tasteful tats, designer cell phone and Starbucks)

They speak to no one, except their imaginary friend they would reach if their phone had a signal.

There's no dreamy pie-in-the-sky attraction to either one like California exudes.
Therefore, their numbers are certainly believable.

Well, considering that he's a professor at Stanford University.
No surprise that he's clueless in general, and especially clueless about anything that doesn't sing HIS praises.
After all, he's a professor.
He lives and works in California.
All the people he meets want to be in California.

This is what I call an orgy of self-congratulation.
People who all think the same (said error notwithstanding) view each other favorably.
Anyone who disagrees with them simply doesn't "get it" because they are certainly not as smart.
They feel as though they are elites, that their lucky situation is an Eden for a restricted few.
And the kicker - they are either making obscene salaries or are having their school tab covered.
All of it by taxpayer money.

I guess that's pretty smart, eh?

Being right down the road from San Francisco makes it the Daily Double.
With a score like that, these people feel they simply cannot be beat.

Then they drive across the desert and have to get gas at an isolated truck stop...

I dunno, but he is correct either way.
I know a thing or two about Delaware, and I've been in every corner of Wyoming.
Very few people in Arizona (especially the ones who flocked here from elsewhere) have a clue about other states.
My travels through the majority of our states also clearly bore this out.

He is correct.
Most people cannot be bothered to do any serious thinking and then work for their beliefs.

Of those that do, they immediately get sucked into the California Spin Machine.
These people are easy to spot.
They will eagerly tell you how great California is, and never, ever acknowledge the state's abysmal failures.
Environmental laws in a land very much raped and pillaged - they now buy all their electricity from neighboring states.
Political movements the people wanted (and keep voting for) that eliminate their own Liberty.
Laws to put EVERYBODY in jail for ANYTHING, and then a criminal justice system that lets the worst walk.
Outta sight prices on everything - and these idiots believe it's because of the state's "exclusivity."

Then I look at all my neighbors and coworkers who were smart enough to GTFO and move to AZ.
I can't help thinking "so the ones left behind are really dumber than these guys?"

Same here. As much as I love Ventura County, Texas is calling me. I've got family there to help the transition, and what I pay for an apartment here would be a two-bedroom house note there, with bills and insurance thrown in.

He is correct.
Most people cannot be bothered to do any serious thinking and then work for their beliefs.
Most people from "purple" states see the ideologies of the reds and blues to be extreme, short sighted and self-centered. Extremists on either side are the ones who cannot be bothered to do any serious thinking or even consider that there might be another side to the coin and tend to forget that we live in a society with lots of different people.

I see it as one team who has made me their enemy, and the other team pretending I'm one of theirs to oppose them.
I too am a man without a party, but I don't need catchy slogans and complicit media to establish my values for me.
Candidates come and go, my convictions remain.

You say that with a straight face?
Yeah, I do get hit from both directions but I also get the advantages of the parts that I like about each side. Can you say that with straight face?

I'm fiscally conservative and socially liberal - I believe in smaller government, not government as an employer but I'm also pro choice. As long as the reds and the blues keep each others' sanity (or lack thereof) in check to maintain balance, I win.

It's true that being in the center between the two groups of shit-flinging zoohouse monkeys has its unique, ahem, charms , but I'd rather think through my positions, and continue to do so, rather than cling to them in the face of changed circumstances.

There's nothing wrong with having yourself anchored to a sense of right and wrong, but I think it's more important to have an understanding of how to apply one's principles to a world that doesn't necessarily share them. The schism in this country has made rational communication all but impossible between the various factions, giving life to the fears of some of our founders.

The willingness to consider something before dismissing it is vital to a sensible body politic. We have lost that.

WE?

Critical thinking error Number One for ya.
I have considered the "other side" since my childhood.
Given plenty of opportunity for my opposite to state their case and enumerate its value and advantages.

Found them lacking.

Not from ignorance (the Left's favorite accusation) did I establish my fencelines.

Doesn't work that way for me.
The biggest reason is that only one side offers anything I can use.
And the list is short.

The other side offers me nothing but higher taxes, less liberty, more social decay, and income redistribution.
Said they were gonna END THE WARS if they got elected - did they?

Said they were gonna end crony capitalism if they got elected, which they did.
Now it's crony Socialism.

Straight face.
Boom.

Fine, you believe what you believe and I respect you for your convictions, just understand that not everyone believes the same things that you do but we all live in the same country. Therefore, some compromise is sometimes needed if some folks want to get what they want while other folks get what they want. If you want things run all your own way, you have to buy an island and put up a flag or your own.

Drivers licenses for illegal aliens, WTF? What part of illegal don't they understand. Crap like this makes it difficult to enforce the current immigration laws and if they haven't noticed, it's a drain on the present system and Joe Q taxpayer
