Honestly, California is just one of those states that has a strong identity - It's the home of movies in the US, and is therefore one of maybe two or three states regularly featured in film and television.

I've spent a lot of time in various Californian cities, and I love the state. It's beautiful, and the majority of the people I've met outside of Hollywood and San Francisco are pretty much just like people everywhere else I've been. I think that Los Angeles and San Francisco get bagged on a lot because of the stereotypes about the people living there - Stereotypes that aren't entirely fair.

I've met people from those places that "fit" the stereotypes pretty well, but many did not. I have had pretty interesting times both places... I've seen the seedy side of Hollywood first hand... *Ahem*.

Anyway, I think tat MOST of the Californians that I've met who seem to look down on the rest of the US are pretty silly folks, and that relatively small minority are probably recent transplants, and not natives. I think that same thing apples to other hip places like New York City, and Austin - It's always the non natives that seem to have an elitist attitude about the place they live in.

Anyway, California is awesome, and I wouldn't mind living in a lot of places there... Probably not LA or San Franciso... Hell, I couldn't afford to live in SF.

And to the guy bagging on Texas (I'm hoping that was a joke). You really should research this place a bit more. The stereotypes don't fit more often than they do. Just saying...

Hah, I know my friend moved to Illinois and sounds like there are some stereotypes people have.

And for the part about non locals, I realised over the past few years that many people that live here had no family anywhere near california in the 1980s, but my family goes back here to way before then. I am wondering what the population here will eventually look like, since my family has alot of friends that lived here forever and moved up to the mountains, but there are alot of new people here.

Gas was $.75 a gallon and leaded, My Impala was equipped with the largest available stock powerplant offered in the year of my birth, radar technology wasn't widespread in law enforcement and the San Mateo bridge was a balls out straightaway with no traffic before my odd houred shift.

As an Arizona resident who lives in the desert west of Phoenix, the majority of the plates I see on I-10 are CA.
These people have stumbled, dazed and bewildered, through a vast, open desert.
There were no palm trees, street bums, Starbucks, sidewalks - not even street lights for a couple hundred miles.
No beaches, no skaters with running dogs on a leash, no billboards, no smog.
It seems that a road extending for miles through natural terrain absolutely destroys their meager driving skills.

It's actually pretty amusing to see a BMW or Mercedes with CA plates at the few area gas stops.
Among the locals who pass through, you'll see tha California crowd try to mingle.
(Easy to spot with the peroxide hair, silicone boobs, collagen lips, tasteful tats, designer cell phone and Starbucks)

They speak to no one, except their imaginary friend they would reach if their phone had a signal.

Most people from "purple" states see the ideologies of the reds and blues to be extreme, short sighted and self-centered. Yeah, I do get hit from both directions but I also get the advantages of the parts that I like about each side. Can you say that with straight face?

I'm fiscally conservative and socially liberal - I believe in smaller government, not government as an employer but I'm also pro choice. As long as the reds and the blues keep each others' sanity (or lack thereof) in check to maintain balance, I win.

It's true that being in the center between the two groups of shit-flinging zoohouse monkeys has its unique, ahem, charms , but I'd rather think through my positions, and continue to do so, rather than cling to them in the face of changed circumstances.

There's nothing wrong with having yourself anchored to a sense of right and wrong, but I think it's more important to have an understanding of how to apply one's principles to a world that doesn't necessarily share them. The schism in this country has made rational communication all but impossible between the various factions, giving life to the fears of some of our founders.

The willingness to consider something before dismissing it is vital to a sensible body politic. We have lost that.
