MLP NASCAR Showdown (Fantasy League)

Some of us were discussing a MLP fantasy league in another thread so I went ahead and started a group for us over at Yahoo Fantasy Racing. For anyone who wants to join up, the registration info is below.

I participate in one of these fantasy leagues every year on another forum and they can be good fun so I figured people here might enjoy taking part.

I have to run out for a while but will post some additional info on how this all works once I get home later on.

In the meantime, here is the required info:

Group ID#: 19904
Group Name: MLP NASCAR Showdown
Group Password: les paul

Re: MLP NASCAR Showdown

I might get down with this but I have no clue how fantasy leagues work since I have never participated before in any fantasy league. Do you just pick a driver for a specific race or do you stick with the same driver throughout the season?

Slightly off topic but I'd be down for a MLP fantasy football league next season. I'd be willing to set it up

Re: MLP NASCAR Showdown

OK...here is a quick rundown.

For each race drivers are divided into A, B, and C list drivers (they stay on the same list all year). Each week you are required to pick drivers for the upcoming race (details in a second). These picks must be made by Wednesday or Thursday (don't worry, the deadline is clearly spelled out by Yahoo and you can also set it so that you get an email reminder). As I said, you pick drivers each week. You can leave drivers on your list for a few weeks at a time but I do not recommend it as different drivers do better on different tracks. Also, and here is the important part - you can only use each driver for a total of 9 races during the season (that is as a starter, they can sit on the bench every race without it counting). This makes it that little bit harder as you have to marshall the use of your drivers so as not to run out of picks for a good driver before the end of the season.

For each race you pick two A list drivers (one starter and one on the bench), four B list drivers (two starters and two on the bench), and two C list drivers (one starter and one on the bench). You are awarded points for how well your drivers qualify if they qualify in the top four or five. Obviously, the driver who takes the pole gets more points than the driver in third. After qualifying is over for each race you can swap drivers from the bench into the starting lineup or vice versa. There is a deadline for this as well and it is usually the night before a race. In total, you will have four drivers entered in each race with the same amount sitting on the bench.

After a race is completed Yahoo awards points based on how well each of your drivers did that week (starters only, not bench drivers). Points are awarded to all drivers in reverse order from the winning driver down to the last place driver with, obviously, the race winner getting more points. You are also awarded points based on how many laps your driver led during the race. Once Yahoo has finished calculating the points they post the weekly totals for all group members and rank them from first to last based upon their point totals. The season is divided into spring, summer, playoffs, and entire season. The person with the most points at the end of each session wins that session and the person with the most points at the end of the season wins the year and MLP bragging rights.

Re: MLP NASCAR Showdown

It seems you have to register first and, as part of that registration process, you will be asked to 'create or join group' at which point you click on join and use the info provided above.

Sorry for the confusion - it has been a few years since I registered so I forgot how to do it.

If anyone has trouble send me your email address in a PM and I will send you an invite later this evening.

Here is a link to a help page on Yahoo:

My apologies for any confusion...as I said, it has been ages since I registered so I forgot how to do it especially as I am trying to get it done before heading out to run some errands.

Re: MLP NASCAR Showdown (Fantasy League)

Yahoo puts out a preview of every race (you'll see the preview link at the top of your roster page and a .pdf symbol when the preview has been added) that gives hints for who to pick. It is well worth checking out when choosing your drivers.

Re: MLP NASCAR Showdown (Fantasy League)

The preview is up now...I just checked it out for this week.

One thing I did discover is that I cannot make separate rosters for the two groups that I belong to - the roster is the same for both groups. Shitty, I was considering making slightly different picks if I was on the fence about any of my choices.

Re: MLP NASCAR Showdown (Fantasy League)

Welcome to the show.
It's that time of year again
when NASCAR confounds
fantasy players with one of
the least predictable races of
the season. At its best, plate
racing was always volatile.
The two-car tandems that
have defined these tracks in
the last year and a half were
no more predictable than the
multi-car drafts with machines
lifting and falling
through the field like a seesaw
in a hallucinogenic dream,
but there was at least a sense
that the driver's held their
fate in their own hands. It
seemed to be a step in the
right direction-until NASCAR
halted the advance.
Pack racing is back, mostly because
the sanctioning body
says that is what fans want. A
series of rules' changes during
the offseason was instituted
that discouraged drivers from
hooking up in two-car tandems
for more than a couple
of laps. And NASCAR got what
they wanted in the first race
of the season. Fans of carnage
were treated to three multicar
accidents and one violent
flip down the frontstretch in
Saturday night's Bud
Shootout.
Folks: it ain't over yet.
After the race, several drivers
including the race winner Kyle
Busch told the media that the
problem and the solution rest
in the hands of the drivers
themselves. This may very
well be true, but in decades of
pack racing already in the
books, the drivers have rarely
found a way to get to the end
of a 400- or 500-mile race
without triggering a "Big One"
Crash. And while the cause of
these accidents is almost always
driver error, that is of
little consolation to the poor
dupes who did nothing wrong
further back in the pack.
The incidents in Saturday
night's race were instigated by
the gamut of experience.
Young drivers like Martin Truex
Jr. and Joey Logano were
joined in misery by the most
experienced racers in the field.
In the closing laps, a multi-car
crash was triggered when Jeff
Gordon apparently forgot that
he was at Daytona and tried
to bump-and-run past Busch.
The resulting accident had him
tumbling onto pit entrance
when he overcorrected to the
right while attempting to avoid
the spinning No. 18. Gordon
pinched Kurt Busch and Jamie
McMurray into the wall, was
turned sideways by that contact,
and flipped several times
before coming to rest on his
roof.
Spread the Wealth
After the race, drivers predicted
the Daytona 500 would not be
nearly as action-packed because
teams wouldn't risk the
same moves with points on the
line. History does not support
those claims. The "Big One"
crash has been an integral part
of restrictor-plate superspeedway
racing since NASCAR
began artificially slowing the
speeds of the cars. When there
is a ceiling to their speed, even
lightly funded teams and the less
imaginative crew chiefs can
achieve the top numbers. Limited
options make for desperate
drivers and even the most
experienced ones in the field-like
Gordon-are not immune to imprudent
maneuvers.
On Sunday, the fans will get the
show they've clamored for.
They asked for pack and the
accidents that go along with it;
NASCAR listened.
Even with impatience removed
from the equation, it is too
much to ask 43 drivers to remain
perfect for 500 miles. A
lapse of judgment or concentration
by anyone in the lineup
can wipe out the field and that
is simply a fact of life in the four
races contested at Daytona and
Talladega. Saturday night, most
of the accidents started at the
head of the field with Paul
Menard and Jeff Gordon wrecking
out of top-five positions and
the only thing that kept 25 cars
from piling into the melee was
the fact that only 25 cars
started the Bud Shootout.

Cool, there are five of us thus far. Let's hope a few more people decide to join us.

On that other forum we have a thread that runs from the beginning of the season each year. If we get enough people to join us in this maybe we can ask one of the mods to sticky this thread for us so that we can continue discussion throughout the season rather than starting new threads each week.
