Do you speak for most people? You throw more insults than most people here...SOME people consider that being a "hostile dickhead".

Four of us kicked in $2,000 each and rented an attic, installed 4 WATTS lines and opened up a microchip brokering firm. Reagan had nothing to do with it as I don't remember him putting up any cash.

I have no guilt or regrets.

EDIT:

We cashed out after a year and a half.

Yeah KSG - I'm kinda stuck.

I've traded more witty zingers with River than I could count - including a few that were too obscure for me.
Oh well, I survived...

The cat pics - I just keep on scrolling.

Gin & Pentatonic got my vote for best username of the month when he joined.
Shortly thereafter I got a small taste of his wrath over something obscure that fired him up.
Kinda hurts to let a fellow Texan dig his own grave ya know?

Kinda like seeing my ex-wife go off a cliff in my new car - not sure how I feel about this one.

Re: Income inequality : Who are the 1% ?

The most my father ever made in his life was $15,000/year, we lived in the South Bronx.

Whats impossible about making a mil in a year and a half brokering? It gets done every year on Wall Street. We didn't steal from the down trodden but from the Fortune 500. And as I said, Reagan never chipped in or man the phones.

EDIT:

It could never be duplicated today what we did. We were at the right place at the right time, sheer luck. Most computer manufactures, and defense contractors had stalled production during the late 70's, the chip mfg plants supplying them shutdown. By 1980 things picked up enough that the chip mfg plants could not meet demand due to the long lead times needed to make chips and test them, especially mil spec testing. The OEM's that needed these chips had assy lines down, not a good place to be in, so their purchasing departments had to resort to the gray market to obtain parts - us. We could name our prices on many parts.

Re: Income inequality : Who are the 1% ?

I never had to steal from anybody and nobody manned the phones for me either...I'd appreciate the freedom to do with my hard earned money as I see fit. You give to the charities of your choice, I'll give to the charities of my choice and we all quit worrying about where we each got our money and what we're doing with it. What's unfair about that?

It's funny money anyway, we aren't all sharing the same pie...and because of that simple fact, we can make more if we need it. We can literally make as many pies as we want...if only we are allowed the freedom to bake them.

Maybe read my edit I put in. You couldn't replicate today what we did back then. We didn't make a new pie, we cut into the Fortune 500's pie. It was sheer luck and timing.

THAT opportunity might not ever work again, but that's not to say that there aren't other ones that individuals with the right amount of luck, foresight, and hard work might be able to profit in similar ways from. I don't know that this really has anything to do with the OP, but I've known a few self made millionaires that were able to create wealth from the ground up.... Heck, I know a woman that invented a hair braiding device that set her up for life.

I agree that we need to reign in practices that create an unfair advantage for the wealthy (Where that applies), but I don't buy that it's impossible for "the little guys" to get ahead anymore. I've seen too many examples first hand that contradict that.

Doing exactly what you did might not be doable again...but similar things are done all the time. I managed to be in the right place at the right time 3 times...and remember, I lack critical thinking skills. Both of my brothers have been in the right place at the right time...there are millionaires made every year. That's the beauty of Capitalism. All you need is a good idea, some effort and a little "luck".

If you managed to do it, and I managed to do it, then anybody can. Unless you and I are somehow more special than anybody else...which I really doubt.
