Do you have family members who gig with you?

I have noticed that a few people here have either wives or girlfriends in their band.
I do a lot of work with my daughter. In fact we have a gig tomorrow night.
Sometimes we do gigs with a 5 piece, but most of the time ( Better pay ) we just go out as a duo. It's amazing how many people love to see dad and daughter working together. She introduces me as her dad and I tell the audience.. " Rubbish, she's really my auntie". We have a real hoot together. A special kind of magic.
Anyone else work with family members?

Great stuff. It's so nice when you can share your passion with someone who is close to you..

My daughter techs for us. Nothing like having a loved one you trust handling your gear! She's really fast with the string changes.

Re: Do you have family members who gig with you?

Back in the mid 70's myself and my two younger brothers has a 3 piece band, with our cousin doing vocals. It was great, but I always felt we were better during practice then at the gig itself, due to all the distractions. Both my Bros are gone now, too young and left me the eldest all alone. My cousin is still kickin, but we haven't seen each other in years. Those were hellfire days for sure and always bring a smile to my heart.

Re: Do you have family members who gig with you?

My wife and I have played in bands for years. She plays bass. Both my sons started gigging before they were born (literally). My oldest played his first actual out of the womb gig with me when he was 7 (on fiddle--he is an amazing natural musician). He just turned 13 and sits in occasionally on guitar but honestly I am grooming him as my regular rhythm player. He and his 10 year old brother have a band so the next generation is taking over as well.

I know the feeling man..

My daughter has a fantastic voice and excellent pitch. It's also very deep and rich for a girl. She doesn't do all that X factor shit, wavering and screaching around pentatonic scales, but sings in an old fashioned sort of Carol King in yer face way. In fact we have a gig tonight.

I tried to teach my wife guitar many years ago and we'd only got into it for about ten minutes before she told me I was wrong..
We didn't speak for about two days and she's never tried since...

Yeah teaching all day, I know why a lot of kids give up on the classic instruments. Basically most of the teachers are stuck in the 18th century instead of showing the kids how an instrument like a violin or flute can fit into todays music too.

Nope.

Only my dad plays an instrument - and that's the clarinet. My Uncle is the only one who plays guitar in the whole family!

Re: Do you have family members who gig with you?

My twin bro and I just started a rock band with some friends. Hopefully, we can do a few gigs.

My 3-year-old shows an interest in singing. My wife videoed her yesterday singing through my little PA.

Whenever I practice my guitar, she'll ask for the pick so she can strum the strings. She can also name the parts of my guitar. She makes me laugh cause she calls pick ups....hick ups.

Well, at least you have a family member who's into music, even though it's a clarinet and a bit hard to pair up a guitar with.

thats a great point. And thats also why I never lasted in music lessons as a child. I had no intent and interest in learning to play that stuff. I wanted to learn how to play an instrument so I could learn and play music contemporary of my generation. Although the classics are useful to teach theory and such, I still think that some teachers are just too much into it that some students get completely turned off from proceeding with the lessons.

Nope. I'm 15, my mom plays piano, my dad has no musical ability. None of my uncles on the side that lives close to us plays an instrument and one uncle on the other side plays guitar but isn't very good. So as far as family goes no.

Yes, many of the teachers are to blame. You see at eight or nine you can basically get a kid to play any instrument.
The problem arrises when their world opens up as young teenagers. They start to hang around with others who are listening to rock and it suddenly doesn't become cool to be scratching away on Clair Da Lune on a violin.. That's why they often ditch it all.. If the teacher would get them to play along with a rhythm section and do something they could relate to, more would hang on in there.. Shame really.

Re: Do you have family members who gig with you?

phil,
Vascectomy arrives.
Son and I used to do acoustic gigs. Here's a piccie of us playing at the Norwich Arts centre. I'm playing a 1971 Eko 12 string with a DeArmond pickup across the soundhole, and son is playing his 1962 Gibson B-25:

When he got married in May 2006 we hired a club for the evening. He didn't want any disco music, so it was live music throughout the night. He got up to do some numbers with members of my old cabaret band from the late-70s/early '80s who travelled down for the event:

He's playing the Banjocaster I bought for his son.

Most of my family's musically inclined so I've gigged with a few of my cousins, nephews, my sister and father... sadly, none of them have time to do that anymore (or are on different continents XD).

Re: Do you have family members who gig with you?

Wow! I forgot I had even started this thread.......

Nice to see music kept in the family.
Many years ago I tried to teach my wife guitar, but she told me I was wrong in about the first five minutes.
Needless to say that adventure didn't last long and we never spoke for about two days after.

Re: Do you have family members who gig with you?

I used to gig with my 4 brothers back in the 70's a lot.

Then all of the sudden the youngest got all weird and started doing is own thing... you know, recording his own tunes, sleeping in a hyper-bolic time chamber, hanging out with a monkey.

Really changed the whole dymanic of the band ya know.
