How Do You Make Diagonal Cuts With A Table Saw

I want to cut a board That is 18" long. The trick is that it's 10" wide on one end and 11" wide on the other. How is this easiest done on a table saw?

Might help if you can expound on what shape board you want to end up with.

Ya got a rip fence?

Re: How Do You Make Diagonal Cuts With A Table Saw

you must use the Miter Guage if you want to safely make an angled cut on a table saw---

Not rocket science, it can be tricky---

If you have a small bench top saw that does not have a T slot for a miter gauge on it, I would advice against--With the speed that a table saw blad turns, you could turn a piece of lumber into a missile trying to free hand it--IMO

Brian, I have a board that is 18" x 23". I want to end up with it being 11" on one end and 10" on the other. It's 3/4" pine.

I do have a fence on the saw.

Affix another piece on top (at an angle) that will slide square to the fence, then cut away...

Blues, the miter gauge won't work as the board is too long for it. It has to be ripped.

Ext, you're not help at all!

I'm trying to picture how 18x23 is too long to use a miter gauge.

I do have a fence on the saw.

Ahh so you are ripping it.

This will sound like Im joking but I would rather cut it with a skill saw, and no Im not a hacker. Thats how I would do it on the job, even if it were trim and I left it a hair long and sanded it.

Keep in mind while doing that, that if it binds its either going to kick it out of your hand or spin that board like a helicopter.

Ham, I've been thinking about the risk of it biding. I'll give it more thought before I try it. This is for the sides of a Fender Deluxe style cab. In past builds I've used a skill saw. I was hoping to get a quicker leaner cut with the table saw.

The best way to do it in a table saw is as mentioned above. Build a proper jig to do it and would be fine. Going at about 1" to nothing on 23" is fairly steep, and has a good possibility to bind a puke on ya.

I learned my lesson about 20 years ago ripping some 2" blue board insulation so the blad was pretty far up and then out of no where it was out of my hands and spun about 10 times, I nearly crapped myself. I was literally counting my fingers

Re: How Do You Make Diagonal Cuts With A Table Saw

Well, it works great! I just cut four of them.

It was simple enough and safe. I used two sheet rock screws to attach a small board to the top of the piece I cut. The jig piece overhung the piece I was cutting by one inch on one end. This jig piece ran against the fence. It was secure and traveled along the fence without any problems.

Thanks again River Side, and everyone else who pitched in. Even you Ext!

You need a plasma cutter.

Re: How Do You Make Diagonal Cuts With A Table Saw

Glad to help.

You can find jig plans on the web that are adjustable for the purpose of tapering table legs.

Same concept, and really the safest way to go. It doesn't tend to binding, because the cut is always square to the rip fence.

Re: How Do You Make Diagonal Cuts With A Table Saw

Get the adjustable fence that clamps to your rip fence. Sears has them, or you could get them from the wood working stores online. Is the taper on one side only, or symmetrical like a triangle kind of way?

Run a straight edge down the board as a rip guide for a circular saw. Easy peasy.

Capt'n, that's how I've done it in the past. It just doesn't produce as nice a cut as the table saw.

Notorious, only one side is diagonal.

Re: How Do You Make Diagonal Cuts With A Table Saw

If you have the right jig, you can cut almost any shape on a table saw...
