Re: What is your family history

A couple of pics of one of my Great Grandfather's hotels he owned in Switzerland and the south of France. This one is the famous Hotel Du Lac in Vevey Switzerland.
Don't ask were all the family fortunes went.. Squandered at the turn of the century by a silly bugger English soldier who married into the Swiss side. He wasn't any relation of mine but my Mothers stepfather. My poor Granny didn't know what she let herself in for when he took over her finacial affairs.

I have got some furniture from that hotel though. The reclining armchair Humph sits in. Some bureau's, a Louis 14th corner cabinet and a huge Venetian glass mirror in gilt ormelu frame..

Oh well.. Dream on...... Bollocks!!!........

A Victorian reclining armchair, once in that hotel during the 1800's but now home to Happy Humphrey and friends in my music room in Dorset England. Imagine the stories that chair could tell..

Phil47UK - Those are cool pictures... We have not fully traced our family history other than to know that there are many Native-American (Cherokee), but my father was adopted as a child. He spent a good amount of time in Wales, singing in a boys choir.

Re: What is your family history

On my mothers side, my gradparents are from Mexico. My grandfather rode with Pancho Villa. On my fathers, both grandparents were from Spain. But my grandfather's parents ship sank, which left my him an orphan here in the US. He was adopted by a greek family & raised as one. During the time of the prohibition, he ran an underground saloon & tried to gain political power. He was shot in the back of the head by a rival & died in my uncles arms. My father was only 3 yrs old. Pretty interesting stuff. I'm named after him.

Re: What is your family history

I know we got French Canadian in there, and Finlanders, or "Laplanders", most of them were musicians in finland. It's in the genes! On the other side it's French and Italian. Apparently there's still relatives living in Italy, unfortunately my family has no contact with them. Other than that, the rest is history! I wish my family could trace it's roots back thousands of years, wouldn't that be awesome. I'd like to believe i'm a distant relative of Galileo, or Aristotle. Actually I honestly think that i am, and no one can tell me different.

Most of us are probably related somehow.

Afraid not any more single cut..It all went out of the window at the turn of the century, long before I came along. My Mother went from having private nannies when she was a kid in Switzerland to having to pawn her wedding ring in London after the war all in the space of one generation..

Yeah, you must get into geneology man. It's fascinating. I never gave it much thought till one day the phone rang and guy in a broad Irish accent said.. " Hi this is your cousins son phoning from Dublin "... I didn't even knew I had relations in Ireland. He gave me a link to the family genealogy site he had built on my Fathers side.. And there it all was.. My Grandparents.. Great Grandparents.. Cousins.. Hundreds of the buggers. The site presently contains 619 people in 185 families with 6187 pieces of data
I recently learned that my great great great Grandfather was a Russian Jewish guy named Zvi Halevi.. Meaning from the tribe of Levi.. ( Hey might pick up some cheap jeans eh? ).. The Levi tribe being the tribe of Moses..
Now I know why my ancestors wandered the desert for forty years.. Somone dropped a shekel.

Man! it's fascinating stuff I tell you..

Re: What is your family history

My Great-Grandparents on my father's side immigrated through Ellis Island from Germany and settled in Marinette, WI. My Grandfather was born there in 1893. At age 8, he became the man of his family (mother and three sisters) when his dad was killed working in the lumber industry and he started working as a cookie (cook's helper) in a lumber camp. After a rather large forest fire caused the evacuation of the area, the family moved to Detroit, where my Grandfather was a Fireman, a Policeman, during the depression he owned and operated a service station on Fort St in Lincoln Park. He evenually became a carpenter/builder and finally retired as the Trenton, MI building inspector. He was recruited out of retirement in his mid 70's to again be a building inspector for the city of Grosse Ile. He passed away at age 92 while shoveling snow. He had two boys and two girls. His youngest boy is my dad.

My Mom's parents immigrated from Austria-Hungary just before WWI and settled in West Virginia where my Grandfather was a coal miner. They lived in mining towns and barely survived. There were 11 children, three of which died in infancy or as toddlers. Just after WWII, one of the sons bought them a farm on a section of land in Kingwood, WV where they lived out their lives, both dying rather young. My mom moved to the Detroit area at age 14 to work as a nanny and a maid for rich folks in the city. While working as a waitress in Sibley Gardens restaurant, she met my dad who was at the time working for McLouth Steel. They moved to WV where my dad opened a hardware store, and that's where I was born. I have lived in Michigan since about age 2. Parents are seperated but both still living (80's).

Have you tried to trace back your line in Germany and Austria? Could be some interesting stuff there as well Monroe. Great story...

No, I haven't, but I probably should. My mother's family might be much harder to trace because the borders have changed several times since they lived there. I doubt very much if I'm related to the Habsburgs...LOL. Also, both family names were distorted during immigration. Sometimes this happened because of spelling errors, (many immigrants were illiterate) and the people working at places like Ellis Island would guess at the spelling. Other times they would actually shorten or ammend names they deemed too odd or long. My last name is spelled as it is in Scotland, but it should be the German spel
