Playing Your Favorite Guitar

I just got done playing on 'Miss Amy' (my R9), and I have to tell you - this recent acquisition is at the top of my inventory! I still have to take her in to get a bone nut, and the neck cleaned a bit, but she sings! I love my other Lesters and strats, but this one just...

So which guitar is your fav to play, and what do you feel the moment you play on it?

Re: Playing Your Favorite Guitar

I have to say I'm thrilled with my 2010 LP Special, unplugged or through an amp. It seems like the perfect guitar for me until I'm on the mondo distortion channel: then I need my humbuckered LP.

The neck is thin (not my favorite carve), and the pickup selector switch is atrocious. But it still feels "bonded" to my need for expression on a guitar. No frills, all thrills.

Then I stand it in a corner and just look at its elegant simplicity. Perfect red-mahogany Gibson satin under incandescent lighting from across the room.

Awfully glad I bought it, even though the neck could use a bit more heft to be "perfect" all-around.
Pretty smart on my part to buy it even though I had to kite from my wife's checkbook at the time.

Not all my impulses work out this well.

Re: Playing Your Favorite Guitar

Mighty personal question there, Duck!

I have "those" sessions with all eleven now and again, but it happens most frequently with my old '92 Standard and my Epi Junior. I'm on honeymoon with the new Melody Maker V, though, and there's significant risk that will end up in a third marriage. There's more to that than it being fresh blood, though. I won't bore you with the details, but they're rooted much more deeply than how well-put-together and playable the V is.

What it feels like is what all of the best things in life feel like: being lost in the moment instead of distracted by crap that doesn't matter; from where you parked your car to what chord comes next. It's why I play.

For me it's my '90 MIJ hot rod reissue strat, and I can't imagine that will ever change, but I guess it's possible.

Today it was my Hamer Studio Custom.w/P90's. I had reverb on 6 The Hamer almost sounded Fuzzed! I was loving the creamed +thick binding. Comfortable. STEAMING P90 tone. I love this axe. Tomorrow the 86 SG is Calling!

Re: Playing Your Favorite Guitar

well, my favorite guitar is my lp - but only because it looks so fine.
i prefer to play my strat 'cause it's more comfortable, the sound has more clarity and definition, and most importantly, i can be in tune throughout the whole fretboard.

My favorites change. Sometimes the SG, somtimes the Epi, somtimes the Tak. Tonight it was the Squier, I took some time to set up a decent "Couldn't Stand the Weather" sort of patch on my Digitech, the first time I've done that sort of thing in a while, and had a fun time flopping between clean and gritty.

I love and play all my Les Pauls but there's nobody like my Rosie . . .

And there are no words to describe the feeling when I play her. Or, should I say, when she honours me by singing what I can't sing.

My 57 RI Strat. Just got home a little while ago from a gig and that guitar just works for me - it has a good variety of sounds, it stays in tune forever and it has a cutaway for my gut. The only issue I have with it is that, at hot gigs like this one, the neck gets a little gummed up in the back.

Lacquer finish?

Re: Playing Your Favorite Guitar

I used to alternate a lot, and then there was the occasional honeymoon with a new guitar. I also liked to speak well of my strat, primarily, and to tell the world that I preferred it to my Les Paul trad plus. I was a loyalist of some sort.

But something weird seems to have happened: I went on another jag with the LP, and it lasted way longer than usual. Used to be I'd switch out instruments about once every two weeks, but I've been on the LP for much longer than that this time around.

I think I am on my way to being a one guitar player... with my Les Paul being the one!

Re: Playing Your Favorite Guitar

since I only have 2 guitars, an acoustic and an electric, I'd say my favorite is the electric (because the acoustic stayed at home )
I take it out everyday for 2-5 hours.
'tis nothing compared to all the great Gibbys and Fenders around here, but I love it to death.

i do try to rotate between guitars, so i make use of having a collection, but so far my favorite is my 71 SG deluxe.

i mean i know its nothing really that special, but the nut width is really ideal for me and it just plays like a dream.

Interesting.

I had an early '70's SG like that but the pickups were different (funny little things), and no Bigsby.
