I just got a drum machine last week just for that purpose. Alot more fun than just a metronome.

I use a metronome, but I'll try a drum mashine, anyone know if there are any freeware drum mashines out there?

Re: Do you use a metronome when you practice?

It's alot easier for me to lock in to a beat with a drum loop too. But I'm really trying to focus on the meter more than the beat. I need more help then I thought for my timing.

That's ok, just choose a simple beat on the machine. Don't sweat it, everyone needs to practice timing.

The one I got also has bass lines. The relative levels of drum/bass can be adjusted, so if you only want drums, turn the bass off. This makes it more like jamming than practicing, and that motivates me. It's a blast, too.

Re: Do you use a metronome when you practice?

i used either a metronome or a drum machine for so long that i no longer need to rely on that sort of thing for timing. i only use them when recording now.

I have a metronome but I don't use it as often as I should. The volume is too loud and cannot be adjusted. Also, I find its "Tuut-tick-tick-tick" sounds to be very annoying. I will give this freeware a try because my timing really needs to be improved

Re: Do you use a metronome when you practice?

I use a metronome for warmup exercises about 3-4 times a week and have for about the past 20 years. Also, anytime I am working on a new riff or learning parts of a fast solo, I use the metronome to help me build speed.

Any tips on using one? I personally never learned and there are probably others.

Re: Do you use a metronome when you practice?

If you want to develop speed an accuracy, a metronome is the only way. Playing guitar is all about timing.

Another good way to practice is to take an acoustic and strum along with a song, hitting a downstroke every time the drummer hits the hi-hats or ride *with upstroke in between*, and if he does something different with the hats, you follow along.

A good easy song to start this out with is Sweet Child of Mine. Keep the rhythm SOLID the entire way through and follow the hats. Best thing you can do as a rhythm guitarist.

As a lead guitarist, get the metronome out *or drum machine* and follow the beat. If you screw up, start over. Don't cheat or else it isn't practice, it's wanking.

Re: Do you use a metronome when you practice?

Nope. I played drums for about 20 years. In a band situation, the drummer IS the metronome.
