Best Lead Guitarist in Lynyrd Skynyrd.

Best Lead Guitarist in Lynyrd Skynyrd....
who was "THE" Skynyrd Lead Guitarist
Allen was my Favorite... But I think Steve was the best.
(keeping it to the 70's era, no offense to blackfooters, Outlaws or scabs!)

Steve does it for me, but I do have to admit Ricky Medlock is long time favorite player of mine too.

They are all excellent in their own rights.

I love Skynyrd, seen them twice in concert all ready. I think my favorite is Gary just because he's been there for ever.

Hes also the only one left that was onboard the plane when it went down. Must be a lonely feeling. Skynyrd has my highest respect for being the pioneers of southern rock and for everything theyve been through as a band. I dont think most wouldve stuck around. Just goes to show how much they really cared about the fans.

Other: Rickey Medlocke

Saw Lynyrd Skynyrd seven or eight years ago and Medlocke played the vast majority of the solos and tore it up. "Freebird" was especially kickass.

Re: Best Lead Guitarist in Lynyrd Skynyrd.

I picked Allen but it is too close to call. I love them all. I saw the first reunion tour at Philly Spectrum and they "smoked". Ed King was so clean and tasty, apparently Randy R was a big fan of his. I love Gary he is Les Paul and Sg tone. He is like Paul Kossoffs' and Buddy Guys' red-neck son. His solos are right on the edge. Dangerous and beautiful. Allen was a lead machine. He had fantasic tone and phrasing. I love the footage of him abusing his Explorer. Steve Gaines really brought spark to the band. T for texas and I Know Alittle are glorious, he sure made his "junk" Norlin Custom sound like God.

Re: Best Lead Guitarist in Lynyrd Skynyrd.

None of them has quite had the "magic" that the original three did when they added Gaines.
Collins was by far the best, with Gaines a close second, and Rossington bringing up the rear. The three of them together has never, and I dont believe can ever, be reproduced.
If you notice, Rossington only does simple leads, and slide.

Wouldn't the Allman Brothers be considered the pioneers since they rose to prominence earlier than Skynyrd did?

I "want be believe" it was a Norlin , because I'm sick and love Norlins. Pre-net we called them all by rockstars names. PAGEPaul,RonsonPaul... I didn't know their years or specs. I love Steve's playing and his Custom. I remember reading the notes to Nuthing Fancy and being impressed by Allen Collins on Firebird and Trout voice. Garys' playing in ''On the Hunt" is fire-breathing.

Speaking of Skynyrd, I saw a photo over on Strat Talk yesterday that showed Gary Rossington playing a Squier Strat. Bet he made that thing sound amazing.

Lynard Skynard is one of the best bands in the history of Rock n Roll. I remember the first time I heard them...It was like discovering a whole new world. AWESOME!!! Big Gianes fan. Love Rossington. But they got a great player in Medlocke.
Hey Colchar,
Nice to see you here. Um...can we have two Bramptonions on here?

You too and no, we shouldn't have to Bramptonians on here. There really should be some kind of law against that!

Speaking of Brampton, I think I'll head over the Brampton L&M this afternoon just for ****s and giggles (trying to see if they will give me a deal on a pedal). I might head to the Mississauga location too just for something to do.

I actually voted for Steve as the energy he brought to the band in Street Survivors was AWESOME!

Re: Best Lead Guitarist in Lynyrd Skynyrd.

I voted for Steve, but any particular day I think I could've just as easily voted for Allen. Obviously they were all great, but I really liked the way those 2 played. I would go:
1.Steve
2.Allen
3.Ed
4.Gary

Although my FAVORITE list would go:
1.Allen
2.Steve
3.Gary
4.Ed

I think Steve was the best..... Allen was my favorite. I prefer Gary Rossington to Ed King, but Ed King was probably a better guitarist than Gary.

He was a Phys Ed teacher.

Quote:
In 1970, Van Zant sought a new name. "One Percent" and "The Noble Five" were each considered before the group settled on "Leonard Skinnerd", a mocking tribute to a physical-education teacher at Robert E. Lee High School, Leonard Skinner,[4] who was notorious for strictly enforcing the school's policy against boys having long hair.[5][6] The more distinctive spelling was adopted before they released their first album. Note that almost no Southern accent distinguishes between /ɛ/ and /ɪ/ before nasals, so the pronunciation of Leonard Skinner's name would have been /ˌlɪnərd ˈskɪnər/, which is why the 'distinctive' spelling of the name would have made sense to the band members. Despite their high-school acrimony, the band developed a friendlier relationship with Skinner in later years, and invited him to introduce them at a concert in the Jacksonville Memorial Coliseum.[7]

Skinner allowed the band to use a photo of his Leonard Skinner Realty sign for the inside of their third album.[8] Skinner died on September 20, 2010, at age 77 after a battle with Alzheimer's disease.[9]

Though not currently a member of LS.

Artimus Pyle is still alive.

Gary is my favorite player in the band.

He had (has) a cool slinky style that I like and to me, defines the band.

No denying that Steve Gaines was a heck of a player though. (Everybody else too)

Re: Best Lead Guitarist in Lynyrd Skynyrd.

They were all great Southern Rock Guitarist; however, Stevie Gains is the only one who stands out as a songwriter as well as a poet. None of the other three guitarist wrote without the help of Ronnie Van Zant providing the lyrics.

On the Street Survivors LP, Stevie was the sole writer of "I Know a Little" as well as "Ain't No Good Life". He even sang "Ain't No Good Life" on the Street Survivors LP. It's a shame he only had such a short lived career.

Stevie played Blues, Country, and Funk as well as he did Southern Rock.

My vote in order would be:

1. Stevie Gains
2. Ed King
3. Allen Collins
4. Gary Rossington (best slide player)

Ed King, Artimus Pyle, and Bob Burns are all three available to play with Lynard Skynard right now. It's a shame that one jealous individual won't let any of them join. Who do you think it is?

To damn hard to choose, but I went with Allen, but I shouldn't have.
He is my favorite, but I don't think he is "the best".

But whoever does the lead on this (Theres a bend and a slide at 2:19 that gives me goosebumps) :

Gets my vote for The Best.
I've heard its Ed King and I've seen a few live videos of him playing it, although tone, note selection, phrasing, etc., of what I have seen have been quite different live.

But Gary's slide playing has been a huge influence on my own slide playing (Well, him and Duane).

Ed King is my fav. They are all great without question. Even the cats who came on board on guitar later are serious guitar players. Ed is a California boy too. LS and the Outlaws are two of my favorite southern rock musical groups.
