Question Slow-Down Software

I've been in running into things that are just too fast for me to work out for myself.

Two questions:
Do you guys feel this is cheating or should I be able to get this stuff with out it?

And if its not do you guys have any to recommend?

Thanks

Re: Slow-Down Software

I've never used one, but I would suggest making the part into something you can play. If it's something I really want to learn, I'll play the specific part about twenty times without trying to play with it. Since I then have it stamped into my brain, I'll try to slow that down and see how far I get. Then I'll play along with the recording to see how far I've gotten and go from there.

I usually don't run into this problem since I don't learn recorded solos. I think your ear will gradually develop itself and it will make it easier for you in the future.

Keep it up and don't get discouraged. Good luck!

Re: Slow-Down Software

I use GDT3 from Renegade software. I wish they had something like this 35 years ago. I'd be soo much better. The old slow down the vinyl record thing was rather limited. When it comes to learning, there is no cheating. You are learning to be a better player. Use what ever it takes.

Oh, using this program has helped my playing more than anything else since I have started playing 39 years ago.

Re: Slow-Down Software

I use a piece of software called Best Practice. You can slow things way down and loop at any point. It makes it really nice to be able to try to get a part down and then slowly speed it up.

Also, you can change the pitch of recordings up or down by several semitones. Quite handy if you want to play along with SRV or something without retuning your guitar.

You can get it here:
Download BestPractice 1.03 - BestPractice is a tool to slow down, speed up and/or pitch shift music, either from a wave file or directly from a CD - Softpedia

Re: Slow-Down Software

You can also use a Boss RC2 loop station. It can record any audio input up to 16 minutes and can then be slowed down without screwing up the pitch so you can play along and figure riffs out. Its also a loop station with some real basic built in drum tracks, so you can effectively create your own backing tracks.

Re: Slow-Down Software

i use an Akai Phrase sampler. $135 it can loop up to about 35 seconds and you can
break that down to 2 second intervals.

you can slow it to 2/3 and 1/2 speed w/o losing pitch

i use it every day and im not ashamed of it.

i have stupid ears see. so i can play the same lick for an hour and still not get it.

this thing really helped me

Re: Slow-Down Software

Why would you be ashamed?!? Not only is it a great tool for figuring out hard licks but does improve your ear over time.

Re: Slow-Down Software

I have one of those TASCAM Guitar Trainers. I record tracks to CD and throw them on--it'll slow it down something like 50X.

When I was in my SRV phase I used it all the time. Now I use it for rehearsing--it has some rudimentary OD and effects built in, as well.
