Les paul junior project (DC)

I'm making a '59 les paul junior DC guitar out of mahogany for the body and neck, and Camatillo rosewood for the fingerboard so I thought I'd post some progress here...

Here's the 2 piece blank about to be glued up

this bad boy cuts through this wood like butter!

the template goes on...

and a router with a profile bit cuts the body to it's final shape.

it doesn't have the depth to cut it in one pass, so the template is removed and the rest is then cut.

...so far so good!

I'll put some pictures up as I go along.

Gotta' be dark trans red really, It's the law!
the fingerboard is a nice red/brown colour, and the tortoiseshell pickguard material should go well with them too.

Re: Les paul junior project (DC)

The Camatillo Rosewood came yesterday, along with the head plate and tortoise pickguard material.

The headplate was probably put through a thickness planer with blunt blades, need to get rid of that tearout with a scraper and some 120 grit paper.

Here's a pic of the fretboard being sawn to width. It made a really cool sound when it was cut; like how the harmonic scale sounds!

Tapering the fretboard to 45mm at the nut and 54 at the body. (I left 1mm either side of the line for error; a wide margin but in my experience it's better to leave wood on than to take more off.) The neck has those chunks taken out of them for a reason, it's a secret though :P

The pickguard material. It's really thin! it won't need any screws because it's self adhesive, and there aren't any electronics behind it. It'll be a lot more glossy, it just has that protective film over it.

Single bridge dogear P90. I was either thinking a GFS pickup or winding one. not hard to wind one, just a pain to set everything up.

Anyway, here's some more pics. Not many today, I'm waiting on an order from stewmac with some tools and materials.

Here's a mitre box i'm making for fretting.

The fretboard sits on the sliding carriage (loose piece of mdf) and is held on with a couple of pieces of double sided tape. The board can then be moved along, but still won't move when being sawn. I still need to put on the fret location markers to make it really easy to cut all the slots in the right place. The benefit of having a box like this is that it you can have different carriages with different scale lengths on, as apposed to several mitre boxes with all the slot sawing slits cut.

To stop the carriage from moving around, when the slot location is aligned, a small wedge holds the thing in place by friction.

And here's the box with the fretboard in.
