Thumbs up New pup tomorrow...

I have a Rockfield SWC(bridge) on it's way for my LP Classic to replace the 500t. I went with Rockfield because I like the sound of the clips I've heard and they're easy on my wallet . I'm going to attempt to install it myself. I like to try to do things on my own rather than have to pay someone. Especially if it's a simple task. I've already contacted Todd Rockfield and asked about the wiring configuration. He was very quick to respond. I had a few questions before I do the installation though...

- When I remove the old pup should I try to remove all the old solder? If so, any tips on getting it off without making a mess?

- Do you need to use flux or is it just a recommendation?

- Is there something you can substitute for the purpose of using flux?

- Will tinning the wires make the installation much easier?

Hope these questions aren't stupid. I'm sure they've been asked many times. I just like to cross every "t" and dot every "i" before I do something new. Any info/input will be appreciated. Thanks.

Use a spring loaded solder sucker. You can get them at any Radio Shack. Heat the joint until the solder starts flowing, then hit the button on the solder-sucker, and it sucks it all up for you.

I don't use a separate flux, but it may be incorporated into the solder.

- Is there something you can substitute for the purpose of using flux?

No.

- Will tinning the wires make the installation much easier?

Yes. Tin the wire ends before you put them in place. I also like to nick the tip of my iron with some solder and wipe it off before soldering.

Does this just keep the tip clean?

It helps solder melt easier and keeps the iron from over heating the pot

Re: New pup tomorrow...

Also, I heard that when soldering a pot you should make sure the pot is set to "0" incase you do overheat it a bit. That way you will not "burn" a spot in the pot's sweep. Good luck!

Always good to err on the side of caution. Thanks.

Good to know. I assume you just use an old rag or something to wipe it on?

Thanks for the info guys. I'm itching to get home and see a package waiting for me . I'm going to try to chronicle my new venture with some pics also. So I'll get an update out here when it's over. Hopefully without incident.

More tips and suggestions are welcome.

Re: New pup tomorrow...

Thanks. I'll see if I can find a sponge somewhere in the house.

I borrowed a soldering iron from my father in law, but it was a soldering "gun". It was 150w! I ended up just going to Radio Shack and grabbing their $8 30w soldering kit. I didn't want to fry anything with the gun. I'm at work now , but tonight is the night. I'll post an update when I'm done.

Re: New pup tomorrow...

I use Desoldering Braid from Radio Shack to suck up the old solder. It's very easy to get into tight places and it absorbs every spec. Just place the braid on the solder to be removed and lay the hot iron tip on it until it absorbs it all (about 2 seconds). The tip doesn't touch the solder so it stays clean. Most importantly, I use Tip Tinner and Cleaner, also from Radio Shack, to tin and clean the soldering iron's tip before applying the new solder which keeps the iron distributing its heat at its very best to give you clean, professional, and strong solder adhesion. The solder goes on very shiney when done correctly. If it's dull then remove the solder, tin and clean the iron's tip, and apply fresh solder.

There are plenty of videos on YouTube demonstrating how to apply and remove solder. The tips, tools, and precautions they cover will help you do a perfect job if you don't have much soldering experience. When I first started soldering, I practiced removing and applying solder on an old circuit board to get a feel for it before working on the "real thing". It's easy to put on too much solder without practicing first.

Re: New pup tomorrow...

Thanks, ehamady6. The guy at Radio Shack did mention the braid. I didn't get it last night. I might stop and get it on the way home. I don't want a mess in my Les.

Re: New pup tomorrow...

That copper braided wick is the best way of cleaning up extra solder... you can also stick some down underneath where you're melting in order to keep it from dripping onto something else. Another must is a damp sponge to periodically wipe off your tip. DAMP sponge.. not sopping wet.. basically you just want it wet enough so you're not burning the sponge. Also, be sure to tin your tip with solder before putting your iron away... keeps it from corroding.

I'm not an expert on soldering, but both of my in-laws have been doing it for a living for the last 15 years or so.. which is nice because I've got one of their $300 soldering irons right now.

Re: New pup tomorrow...

Huzzah! Operation was a success. And man it sounds B-E-A-utiful! This SWC sounds far better than the stock 500t. I'm thinking about getting a SWV for the neck. Here's a new pic:

A few changes to her. I'm very happy with the Rockfield. The sound is much clearer. I can here all the strings when playing chords now. The 500t was a little muddy or something. Just no clarity. It sounds great with the drive channel in my Hot Rod DeVille. So if there's anyone looking for a new pup that is on a budget like me, I highly recommend taking a look at Rockfield.
