DID I JUST GET TO PLAY A BURST?

a guy had an old les paul at our blues jam last night
i got to check it and it aint no historic , i know that.
serial # 8 3622
was very cool to say the least, said he's had it forever.
well i'm not an expert at anything except fuc*ing up, so i'm just wondering.
i know this thread is useless w/o pics, but perhaps next week, he said he would come back, as i let him jam a little xtra

Re: DID I JUST GET TO PLAY A BURST?

Could very well be a 2003 Historic 58 reissue. Not sure how high the serial numbers climbed on Gibsons in 1958, I believe that 3622 would be the number of that guitar for that year if it's a burst. That would include all Gibson's produced that year, not just LPs.

How do you know it wasn't a beat up aged Historic? That's a valid SN for a 2003 model.
BOTB book shows the lowest SN pictured in the book as 8 3096 the highest in the book shows a SN of 8 6752. But that's only a few 58's that are shown in the BOTB book. If the guy is telling the truth then you probably played a vintage burst. Better make friends with him and see if he'll sell it to you because you can't live without it. Who knows, he may let you have it for only $150K.

I may even be a 93 model but I'm not sure about the SN format on those.

well , i wasn't a 2003 historic, or a historic at all.
i've owned , own and seen many, aged by R/S H/M ECT.
wrong font for a 90's as well.
i have some 50's gibsons myself, and the serial at least looked right , to me , but again ,[see 1st post]
i'm makin' no claims, [see 1st post]
just thought the # might help those in the know
the owner didn't think it was anything special, but i did ,and asked to check it out.
anyway, i was thrilled to play it, and was really impressed .
i hope he comes back

Well if it wasn't anything special, maybe you should try taking it off his hands ...

Why don't/didn't you just ask the guy when he buy/bought it?

i did, he said early 60's, but running a jam is a busy night, and there isn't much time for talking.
you know, everyone wants to play and for more time than eveyone else

it was a very nice player ,and blew me away.

i hope he returns, i'll try to get a pic.

he was just a regular guy, maybe 60 or so.

not he type to come to a place like this

he gAVE THE IMPRESSION THAT TO HIM IT WAS JUST AN OLD GIBSON,NOTHING MORE

I give that impression when I show up at jams with mine as well.
As mine is not a flame monster it usually goes un-noticed-except for the tone

IT IS JUST AN OLD GIBSON, NOTHING MORE. IT DOESN'T MAKE YOU COOL OR PLAY BETTER, BUT APPARENTLY THE GUY HAD THAT COVERED, TOO.
I'D LIKE TO MEET HIM AND SHAKE HIS HAND. LOOKING FORWARD TO PICS.
NICE THREAD

BTW, an old friend of mine used to put an Ibanez logo on his 50's Flying V just to have some peace.

You should tell him what it's worth, roughly. It'd be the right thing to do, IMO
