Differences Between SGs?
OK, so this may be a dumb question. I would really like to pick up an SG, but don't know much about the various styles. I want to use for lead playing, particularly 70s-80s rock. I've looked at Gibson's website, but would value MLP opinions. Recommendations?

Re: Differences Between SGs?
What's your budget?
Most people will probably tell you to get the '61 reissue, but you really can't go wrong with any of them. Don't forget there are also Custom Shop SGs. ![]() I have a SG Standard and I loved it...up until this past week when I got a historic SG. They say the differences aren't that apparant in SGs as they are with Les Pauls. Well, I'm telling you otherwise...WOW! I wanted a historic SG a few months ago, tried one out for a few days and yes, it was very comparable to my SG Standard. I came a cross another historic SG last week (the one I bought) and it's on an entirely different level. WOW...just WOW!! The downfall, of course...they cost a ton of money. ![]() Any SG will work perfectly for 70s-80s rock, really. Last edited by R9.; 10-24-2008 at 07:23 AM. |

Re: Differences Between SGs?
Want to keep it under $1300. Which model did you just get? I looked at your pictures, they are both beautiful. Are the electronics different, the body?

Re: Differences Between SGs?
If you want to save money take a look at the Epiphone SG's. I have two of them and they both have handled everything I through at them. I plays mainly 70s stuff, and they both sound pretty good. With the money you save you could get a great amp too.

The electronics are different, but the body isn't. The historic seems slimmer, but I think it's only my imagination. ![]() $1,300 is the asking price of a new SG Standard up here. They're great!! You can't go wrong with one...but for that much money, you can probably also find a used '61 reissue. So, really what it comes down to is your preference. I'd go out and play a couple to get a feel of which one you like better and then go from there. |

Re: Differences Between SGs?
Thanks for the advice, folks. Just got back from GC where I played several. Really like the SG '61. Must save a few more $$$, then I'll go back next month and GAS it up...

Re: Differences Between SGs?
i have had 3 62RI's and sold them all. I think it's was a too thin neck, and the way it/they stretched/moved when played.
i did however keep 2 SG-X's...nice fat neck, a 500T that's split...and my Coral one has an ebony neck. [see tagline]

Re: Differences Between SGs?
i have an SG Standard. its the only SG i need.
i am in the minority here, but here goes: I do not like the 57 Classics. I have played a few USA 61 SGs and i wasnt impressed. i also have the 57s in my ES-339 and i just like the BBs better. that being said, the 490/498 combo in the SG Standard sounds terrific....much better in an SG than a Les Paul. they are kinda like the BBs with more edge...so they can do the ACDC grind and handle a little more gain if you need them to. obviously play them all. but i think the SG Standard is the best of the USA line. As for the Historics, I really dont know and dont care to know...i'm not an SG nut (only LPs!) the only SG Historic i played sucked balls, but it was a floor model in need of a setup. ymmv |
