On a scale of 1 to 10, err 11.

How good of a guitarist do you consider yourself?

1 being, just getting started & took one lesson or have yet to take one.

To 10 being very good to excellent but not a Rock Star.

Then 11, I AM A ROCK STAR!

Re: On a scale of 1 to 10, err 11.

ive been playing for a couple of years but im not always able to play other peoples songs the most correct way or able to play things by ear. i also sometimes have a hard time translating what i hear in my head to being played on the fretboard.
i am able to play and be happy with what i do and i do get a bunch of joy out of it.
so i rate myself a 5.

...Well...This one goes to eleven...

Hmm, I suppose I'll say 4. I can hold my own in a jam...borderline decently anyway, my improv skills leave a lot to be desired. In terms of learning by ear, I suppose I'm okay, but not that great.

I am always willing to improve. If you are content with your playing you will never improve. Never settle.

Re: On a scale of 1 to 10, err 11.

I honestly don't think I'll ever be good enough. I constantly try to learn new things and try to find new tricks and licks. I went on a mission a few months ago to learn some Van Halen, some Aerosmith, some Stevie Ray Vaughn and some old school ozzie stuff. I can pretty much pick up the songs in a few minutes, but getting them perfectly clean, that requires a lot of practice and memorizing solos, yeah that takes a while. :-)

My poor metronome runs out of batterys often since I've started practicing this much.

You need to get a can do attitude. Erase those negative thoughts from your mind, and you'd be surprised what you can achieve.

I appreciate the idea for being positive, but I strive for perfection, and I honestly can't settle when I know I have improvement to go. I'll always have improvement, if I was the best player in the world I'd still think I was shit. It's how I am, it's what drives me on that never ending path.

My buddies watch me play and try and toss compliments and say how I'm amazing and all that crap, but I know that I have a long way to go.

I'm only happy when I nail something perfect, like today when I went through my bands set and nailed every song correctly.

When I do music other people wrote, I want it to sound like them, or as good as can be done without their fingers attached to my hand.

I listen to Gilmour, Hendrix, SRV, and I go damn those guys just get it, and I try to emulate that and sometimes I pull it off for 30 sec of a song, but the whole thing? Yeah, I got a long way to go.

I do know that I can get it, it's just honestly evaluating my level at this time.

I am an absolutely horrible guitarist. I started playing 12 years ago but sound like I started playing 6 months ago.

Re: On a scale of 1 to 10, err 11.

I'd say I'm a 7.4999.

My skill level is very odd. I can play most things, but as soon as I start trying to learn some kind of complicated solo, I just can't pull it off.
Yet, when I sit down to write a song, I can write solos of equal skill or better than the ones that I just can't seem to learn. Which I guess pays off more in the long run, but it's kind of aggravating when I want to play some kind of solo that has inspired me.

Re: On a scale of 1 to 10, err 11.

Learning solos note for note is good, but it's always better to have your own style which you get from blending several guitarists into your playing. The are nuances of every guitar player than can't be duplicated exactly. I like to find my own thing. Some leads sound like so and so, but I can always tell my playing from someone else. That's not always a good thing either.

Re: On a scale of 1 to 10, err 11.

I've been playing for a year straight a few hours a day after a very long break, maybe 15 years and consider myself a 3.

I can't paly lead guitar to save my life but I'm OK on rhythm

Re: On a scale of 1 to 10, err 11.

I'm mainly a rhythm player... and I use a lot of powerchords... I just feel like that's the best place to flesh out songs.. Trying to play lead by myself just doesn't sound right to me... Unfortunately I never get the opportunity to get together with other musicians and take things to the next level. I do play with backing tracks occasionally but it feels like guitar masturbation to me.

I don't totally suck, but do have my problems. Gifted players like to play with me as do novices, so I figure I'm a 5.

Re: On a scale of 1 to 10, err 11.

I really like listening to myself play and sometimes I will crank out a riff or a solo and think, WOW! that friggin' rocks. I can learn just about any song by ear and now I mostly just work on little nuances in my playing, so I would rate myself pretty high....or maybe I am just an egomaniac.
