Re: David Gilmour Stratocaster

Haha, If I had an R9, I don't know what I'd do. Probably trade in for the Strat, but thats just becuase I don't have a Strat yet, and I have a LP.

Re: David Gilmour Stratocaster

I was jamming this morning cause I had the house to myself for a while and I played my GT Slash, then my Custom Shop Strat, mannnnnn that Strat is the cats ass for sure, it would be one if not my last guitar to go if I had to sell them all. I love my Les Pauls but CS Fenders are killer. I think every one should have at least one.

Awesome. Anyone read that book "The Black Strat?" Good stuff. Mostly for the pictures.

Of all the guitar players in the world, Gilmour definitely deserves a signature axe.

Re: David Gilmour Stratocaster

I made my own Gilmourish strat out of a JV. The pseudo looks of his black one and the EMG DG20 set (Gotoh locking tuners as well). Everything bought used for a total cost of sub -$500

Re: David Gilmour Stratocaster

$4000 is REDICULOUS for that guitar. REDICULOUS. Honestly...a strat can be made JUST like that for much less money.

There is an eBay store called the STRATosphere that buys brand new Fender guitars and takes them apart and sells them.

The body on the Gilmour strat is no more than a standard alder black body...$200 in the store.

The neck is a tinted 50's reissue...$250 in the store

a company called Metalshopmusic on eBay makes loaded pickguards SUPER HIGH QUALITY, I bought one and was seriously impressed and I build guitars and work on them a lot. All CTS pots with vintage cloth/wax wire and orange drop caps.

Davids guitar has fat 50's pups. A fat 50's loaded pickguard with a push pull switch for the extra two sounds (like David's mini switch) is $230 and you can have them make you any color combo you want

Then go to stewmac.com and buy a Wilkinson VSVG vintage strat trem for $100 and then to Warmoth.com and buy some Schaller locking tuners for $50 and you have a guitar that looks EXACTLY like Davids, only it has better sustain with the VSVG trem and stays in tune MUCH better with the locking tuners and some graphite on the nut, sounds the SAME, and only costs $830!!!!!! And it beats any american or custom shop strats ass.

Beat that fender.

And for an upgrade...go to warmoth and buy one of their tinted necks...they beat fender's necks every day of the week.

Now you're probably thinking..."why listen to that guy? he probably doesn't know what he's talking about, fender is always reasonable!"

I'll tell you why

I built myself a strat almost exactly like this.

I bought an Aztec gold fender strat body, a deep tinted Warmoth all maple neck, a loaded Fender Custom Shop 69's pickguard with push/pull for 7 tones (all 3 pups at once and neck/bridge together like David uses) a wilkinson VSVG trem and locking tuners.

I brought it in to a shop one time to try out some amps and had A FENDER REPRESENTATIVE offer me his CUSTOM SHOP '66 NOS (yes, the pretty green one) and a fender Hot Rod Deville for my strat after he played it. HA. HAHAHA! Now...that was a hell of a trade, but I couldn't part with my homemade strat. And besides, I played his strat and mine sounded and played better! ;] ...and I love aztec gold haha

so $4000 for that guitar? David Gilmour is my favorite guitar player. I think he is the most musical and talented guitarist I have ever had the privelige to listen to. But I would not pay that amount for his name to be on my guitar...and after all, its mine, not his anyway ;]

Fender wayyyy overcharges. And I still have Abigail Ybarra's initials on the bottom of all 3 of my pups ;]

Spend $830 TOPS (if you buy everything new and with buyitnow) and show it off!!!! ;];];];]

Re: David Gilmour Stratocaster

Yeah, but what an amazing sound coming out of a crappy line 6. Imagine that played through a Fender Tube Amp.

Re: David Gilmour Stratocaster

My G&L S-500 has the EMG DG20s in it so basically I have this guitar with a better tremolo!

The pick ups are amazing. You can get a really fat sound and twist a knob and get a sound that's as brittle as rock candy.

Re: David Gilmour Stratocaster

Cool. IMO, the EMG single coils sound alot like vintage humbuckers, but I think that was the tone Gilmour was searching for in recent times (2001- Present Day)

I read he needed the EMGs because of all the lights on stage interfering with the single coils. That might not be correct but it does make a lot of sense.

Very true, I think I remember reading that a while ago myself.
Since they are active it will give him a bit of a thicker, fuller sound.

Re: David Gilmour Stratocaster

$4K guitar plugged into a $199 amp. With a Fender tube amp sitting in the background no less!

I couldn't believe how many people have bought these over on the "Official" Fender site's forum. I guess I can't say anything, I've spent more than that on a Les Paul, but I honestly think there is more for your dollar with a Les Paul.
I have to admit though, if I had 4 spare Gs laying around right now, I'd be tempted.

Yeah, but with that price you might as well buy a black american strat, change pickguard, and replace the bridge pickup with a Seymour Duncan SSL-1, shorten the tremolo arm, And you basically have a rough verion David's Black Strat.

Re: David Gilmour Stratocaster

Here's the thing, I have a Custom Shop Strat and I couldn't imagine needing more Strat. If I were going to buy a "David Gilmore" or any other Custom shop, I'd buy it because I want a Custom Shop, I'm not going to try and copy it and tell everyone "man, this is just as good as that Custom shop jobby". That's just how I think, I like the "real deal". I know that people will say, "but you have an R9, not a 59 burst blah blah blah. I don't know, I'm just thinking out loud, no coffee yet, I'll wake up and read this later and say "what the F was I thinking"

Haha, no, I feel the same way, even though it may be the same thing in reality, most people feel the need to get the true, authentic form. Kinda like buying a Epiphone, and upgrading the hell out of it. You can make it sound like a Gibson, but it still won't be a Gibson. (Much love for Epiphone though)

That may have contributed, but ultimately his effects chain had become so long and complex that the high impedance passive pickup signal was decaying and by the time it got out the other end was noticeably weaker and thinner. The low impedance actives stay strong all the way through the chain resulting in a stronger signal and fatter tone. They're also less prone to noise from outside electrical interference like all the stage lighting etc.

IMO this Fender custom shop model is for collectors.
