Peter Greens Pick up heights
Wow just saw some close up film of PG playing Oh Well at the BBC , did anyone else notice the pick up height for the neck pick up.
It was sunk into the body on the bass side and well up on the treble side. Not sure if you can watch the BBC i Player in the USA but it is on there in a programme called Guitar heroes at the BBC. I think I'll try it and see what happens to the tone! The Bridge Pick up looked normal ![]()

Re: Peter Greens Pick up heights
I also saw the clip and though how strange it was....first impression was that the actual sound couldn't be coming from PG's LP with it like that.
Checked again and it appears that it was. I've never seen this before or heard any comment on it, in fact the pickup looked like one end of it had come off the screw and then been cranked up on the one remaining just so as to get it near the strings. Having tried (in vain) to get the OOP. thing to work to my satisfaction (LP Standard faded + Bareknuckle PG Blues), I despair....I've gone up and down forever with pickups trying to get that sweet spot, all in vain. A real conundrum here, for somebody like PG who appears to be so spot on with his phrasing and bends to be on stage with a guitar looking like this is quite something. I'm amazed that one of the technical wizards on one of these forums hasn't jumped in to explain. If it is the answer, sure makes my tone-quest easier! |

Re: Peter Greens Pick up heights
I'm using the nugget "shed pick ups" ... Supernaturals and I have to say they are superb, really nice when in there own position and the middle sound is so good, takes a bit of getting used to you have to use your vol. controls quite a bit but it certainly has put a bit more discipline into my sound

Re: Peter Greens Pick up heights
I tried it, it didn't really make that much difference but I'm still experimenting with the Supernaturals they are so nice, Nugget knows what he's doing.

Re: Peter Greens Pick up heights
Stumble - thanks for the pics...confirms that the bridge one is also like that as well - and crooked in the rings!
Seems to make the small adjustments I'm 'bollucksing' about with redundant! Anybody any observations, was this PG experimenting....wouldn't have thought so, after all he had nailed his sound well before then. Is there any other evidence of this same setup in any other footage or pics? |

Re: Peter Greens Pick up heights
That's not very far in.
Look at the shadow of the pickup ring, how long it is. There's a TV light from the direction of the headstock. The shadow makes the pickup appear to be deeper in than it is. |

Re: Peter Greens Pick up heights
but when you see the actual film it really is sunk in quite a bit. I took nuggets advice and set up the pick up heights in the middle pos and after a bit of fiddling got the sound exactly well happy.

Re: Peter Greens Pick up heights
thanks for the pic 54 deluxe
Remember that the height of the bridge, stoppiece tail and pickup height is greatly influenced by the neck angle. Those days you could lower those a lot without problems. What's more, Gibson then had some examples with not much of an angle... mybe that's why lowering a bit that neck pickup might have worked wonders for good ol'Pete. Just my theory
