How long did it take you to learn to tune?

I'm still learning now. I just finished my 2 hour practice session learning and I am getting much better. Another question to add, How long did it take you to learn by ear?

Re: How long did it take you to learn to tune?

Hmmm... well learning "how" to tune is pretty simple, that might take up to a couple weeks I guess depending on how often you play.

The ear thing is just something that continues to improve the longer you play and the more you actually "pay attention" to what you're hearing. I've been playing off and on for 12 years and my ears are getting better all the time.

If you want to speed up your ability to tune by ear you can tune using chords from a song that you are extremely familiar with. At the very least, practice tuning the E with a tuner and then tuning the rest accordingly.. then try playing chords from that familiar song and adjust the notes until they sound right.

It's something that takes practice.

2-3 weeks, but that was in the 70's so it may have taken longer than I remember.

Re: How long did it take you to learn to tune?

To tune? When I started out, my guitar was rarely in tune, but that didn't matter much, because I couldn't play a single note anyway! When I got serious about it, I could always tell when my guitar was out of tune instantly. I can tune by ear easily now, but I have perfect pitch, so I guess that might change things. Either way, keep playing and it'll come to you

Re: How long did it take you to learn to tune?

it took me twenty minutes to learn how to tune, in the wrong fashion, and used that way of tuning for over 20 years. just recently a luthier explained the concept of equal temperament tuning, which is the correct way of doing it.

Re: How long did it take you to learn to tune?

This may sound funny but if you want to learn to tune by ear - get a Peterson tuner.

The accuracy of the tuning you get from that piece of gear will help you train your ears to really accurate tuning.

Re: How long did it take you to learn to tune?

If you want to tune by ear you need to learn to hear Intervals!

you can get a great CD to help you, look for intervalic recognition in google and you should find some stuff there to help that.
It's like anything else ..... Practice

Does you guitar tutor show you how to tune?

It sounds cool when you tune a guitar too another, you can hear the sound waves, like the sound has a wobble when its not in tune and the sound picks up so nice when both are in tune.

In tune as in plugging the guitar into the tuner and watching the needle go right? Or knowing its out of tune and fixing it by ear?

Re: How long did it take you to learn to tune?

Still learning, only been 35 plus years!
Really, since no guitar tunes "Perfectly " in all intervals, I constantly retune depending on the chord structure I'm going to use. A wound G string helps, but not on electrics unless there is Jazz involved.. I've even gone Buzz Feiten on a couple of guitars, which does help a bit, but it's not the magic that it could be.

I have a very fussy ear, but love instruments that play chords, so I grin and bear it, and change my tuning and technique often.

Re: How long did it take you to learn to tune?

It took me about the usual two to three weeks b4 I could get it. But I'm still trying to get better. It just takes practice. I just use the piano if I really feel like tuning to an instrument. But more often I just use the tuner on my amp, Im reeeaaaallll lazy.
