A question if i may....

It was suggested i move this question to here from the pickup sub-forum for a broader response. hope thats ok

I was fitting a Duncan Pearly Gates that when wired up to a guitar reads about 0.5k on the meter, since taking it out it now reads all sorts of high readings that fluctuate while testing (yes the contact to the wires is good while i do this)

the only sound it makes when in position is a loud earth style hum and no string noise.

I've taken the tape off of the side to check for loose wires etc but nothing is obvious and i don't want to probe too far at the moment
plus it isn't mine so want to get this right first time.

sounds like you have a break somewhere. I would check for continuity on all of the wires from the baseplate/bobbin as well as the winding itself.
